Sohal and Purple Tang-together???

I have a 75 gallon with a Purple Tang that has been there for over a year-
I was looking at a Sohal to add and what I find is "dont do it" but the LFS says no problems.
Its small (the Sohal) about 5 inches, the PT is about 4 inches.

I have a mixed reef;

Any opinions on whether it is a bad move?

Opinion on whether it's a bad move? :wavehand:

Since I'm already hated and labeled 'the tang police' I guess I'll go first. You've already answered your own question. "What I find is don't do it". You already know what you should do, your LFS just wants to make a sale. And I hate to tell you, but a 5" sohal is not small, neither is a 4" purple tang. Neither should be housed in a 75 to begin with, but definitely not together. If you put that sohal in there, I'll bet a dollar to a donut that you'd be removing him ASAP. He will destroy anything that moves in a 75. Please don't do it. And are you upgrading for the purple?

On the contrary TR, I wasn't trying to stir the crap in the other thread, just have had success out of the ordinary. Most definitely due to the size of my tank.

I have to agree and disagree

I think the purple tang would be ok in a 75g reef....if he is the only tang and the only "large" fish

the sohal will not work in a 75g period..it dosent matter if the sohal is the only fish in the tank or stacked in like sardenes it just wont work in a 75g... i have a 7ft tank and iam hesitant to put a sohal in it

as far as the sohal and a purple tang in the same tank if the tank is large enough..its a 50/50 chance of it working or one(or both) being killed... depending on each individal fishes attitude/personality. I know that my 3" purple in a 7x2 tank is a mean purple and he is the smallest fish in the bad boys tank with a clown trigger/asfur angel/HUGE...HUGE..HUGE sailfin tang. and i would have to remove him to add any fish and i have only had him in that tank for a month

Oh I know, I was just teasing ya. That's the thing that I don't like about the internet the most...even when I'm joking, people can't tell. lol I noticed in your sig, your reef is semi-aggressive. That sounds pretty interesting. Do you have a build thread? I'd like to read more about your tank. :wavehand:

I agree completely with the above. And then with the bolded print I'd like to add: if you attempt a purple and a sohal in the same tank, the tank better be very large. And by large I don't mean XX amount of gallons. Large as in footprint. People get too caught up in the gallonage...'this website says I can have a hippo in a 100 gal tank, mine is 100 gallons so it will be fine'. Yet they don't mention the tank is 24"x24"x36". While the amount of gallons plays a role, it's not THE determining factor...not like the footprint is. And also as agreeive?fish said, it depends on each individual fish's attitude (again assuming the footprint and hiding places are large and many). I've had a purple tang that thought he was a gladiator...so they can hold their own. I've never housed one with a sohal though...so I'm NOT saying one could hold it's own against the beast of tangs, I'm simply saying it's possible to find a very agressive purple. Probably not as aggressive as the most docile mature sohal though. lol :spin1:

Thanks guys-I was not going to do it as everything I red also said it would not go well, Maybe if I had a 250+ gallon-LOL

I have had the PT there for over a year, I have read +/- regarding a PT in that size tank-"She" is very happy and I would do it again-granted she may be happier in the Ocean but such is life-LOL

Thanks everyone for chiming in!!

The purple tang is likely to be ok, but would be happier in a larger tank. The Sohal might be ok in a 1000 gallon tank, but most likely not in a 250 gallon tank. They are MEAN fish. By the way, I did not know that TampaReefer79 was the tang police.

No, no one tells me anything. :lol2:

It was on the internet-:fun5:

No worries though.

Thanks again guys-so much nicer here than on that elitist site Reef Sanctuary where you need to be part of the "socialist club" to get answers.

They Suk-

Never have been a fan of Socialism

I had a Sohal and a purple in a 7 foot 200 and they were fine but the Sohal was the boss!! He was close to 10 inches when i sold him and he was a mean fish. He attacked me the last day I had him! Good choice on not doing it!

I have a sohal and a purple and a yellow and a hippo. Can you mix a purple and a sohal sure but sohals get big so a 75 isn't going to work. Now if you want a yellow and a purple that will work in a 75 regardless of what the tang po po say. When you do this make sure the 2nd is bigger than the first. Unless you are adding a sohol or clown tang(very aggressive) My tangs are in a 180 I added my sohol last because they are so aggressive. I also made sure he was the smallest of the 4. My yellow is the dominate tang thus far. The purple was the only one that took issue with the sohol but the sohol just brushed him off.

While the picture is downright hilarious (and will be my new avatar when I get it back) I have to say I agree with MOST of what you said. I have had a TON of success with multiple tangs in tanks, but it's all dependant on how you add them. You have to take tank size, fish size, fish aggressiveness and body shape into account when you try to figure out how to add them.

The ONLY thing I totally disagree on in your post is that you advocate putting a purple AND a yellow in a 75. Neither should be in a 75 let alone both. If you add a purple and a yellow to a 75 I'd bet my next paycheck you'd get aggression - eventually. There's no way that scenario would work out.

75 is small for a purple, adding a sohal is death for them both, i would not take any advice form that LFXS anymore as they seem to only want to make a sale

I had my purple, yellow and hippo in a 75 for 6 months without issue. Would it eventually have been a problem? I'll never know but they were fine for me.
I knew that I was upgrading when I did it. I also have a buddy whom has 2 hippos and a purple in a 75 and they have been together for some time. Is it the best scenario, probely not but it can be done with some success I'm inclined to believe so.

Yes you got a problem there. I am starting to see small issues with my Purple tang and yellow tang as they get older and they are housed in a 120.
