Sohal as been eaten by my Angler!

Yes, you just read right. I just bought a Sohal tang for my tank and it was doing fine. Few hours after, I saw my giant frogfish open is mouth and swallow it right in front of my eyes. I just couln't believe it. I wanted to kill my frogfish but since it is my wife only fish in the tank I decided to leave it like that. Does somebody knows if there is any danger for the other fishes in the tank to be consume just like my sohal or was it just because he was a new addition.

I'm not that sure what I want to do with my angler since I have a 90 g sleeping in one room with everything I need to make it work. I could put him alone in that aquarium. What is your feeling? Does anyone had any angler before? And that kind of problem?

Anthony

I would at least assume that given the opportunity, your Angler will eat any fish that can fit it its mouth. Be especially wary of long slender fish. Given that it ate your sohal I would imagine that it is a prettty good size Angler thus no fish in your tank will be safe long term. The only thing that you can do is move it to a tank by itself to be 100% sure.

Did you get any pics?

I would watch the angler very careful, as this could kill it as well. Basically what can happen is the angler eats something too big, and the food starts to decompose in the angler's stomach before it can be completely digested.

No fish is safe with an angler (including lionfish and scorpionfish).

Compare to Lion fish and Groupers Frog fish can eat the biggest pray compare to their own body, they can easily eat fish 3/4 of their own size or even more.

If it happened in front of your eyes you should have taken the Frog fish out of the water and 99% he would have spit the Sohal out...a little bit too late for that now , just remove the Frog Fish to a tank of its own.

Taking a frogfish out of the water is VERY dangerous to the animal. They gulp air very easily, and can end up getting enough to start floating around the tank (not good). Scott Michael has a long discussion about it in Reef Fishes, Vol I and has written about it several times in AFM.

True.
But still it would have most probably save the Sohal, if it would have been done on the spot.
Most chances are that the Frog fish would go back to the tank un harmed as well.
The Frog CAN gulp air, but its not happening one out of two, nor one out of five or one out of ten, so of course most of us would have take the chance and try to save the Sohal.

The Sohal was around 4.5 inches and my angler is 4 in. wide. I'll try to post pictures of my angler. He is really nice althought. Bright yellow in color and he moves quite slow. So I was surprise that the Sohal hasn't seen it coming. I didn't had time to take pictures since I was shock by what I saw.

When he was trying to swallow my Sohal, I thought I could get a knife and open my angler belly to free the Sohal. But on second thought I decide to leave it like that since my frogfish cost me more than the Sohal and the Sohal might be already dead in the stomach.

Wow, what an ordeal! Sorry about your sohal.

So much has to do with mouth size...as much as i love my fishies, I'm pretty sure they'd eat me right up if i was the right size.

The cat, too. i think I would be kitty cat dinner. Our dog is the only animal I trust.

How many times have you read about cats killing their owners? :p

Now how many times have you read about dogs killing their owners? And the lady who just got a face transplant -- which animal ripped her face off?:(

Just sayin'...

The only thing you have to worry about with your cat is that he might get bored and disgusted with you if you aren't entertaining or attentive enough to his needs. :D

You can put a zebra eel with your angler. You can put other fish too but you should first tell us what kind of frogfish you have because what you can do with him is related with how big he gets.

I would think any fish that's as long as the angler is wide WILL be a expensive meal :(

If you keep him in your 130g, I would ONLY buy fish that are at least the size of the angler, not the width but the length of the fish & better yet also be sure they are BIGGER then his mouth.

He need's his own tank

Frogfish do what they do and that is eat anything that they can. They will also eat things that they should not and this will occasionally be fatal for the angler. Anyone who is surprised that a fish put into a tank with an angler has been eaten has not done appropriate research on that fish.

LOL :D That's the problem - my cat is bored & disgusted with me.
PS You did see the part where I said "eat me right up if i was the right size." Like lizard size!

OMG I would be so ****ed if that happened lol I guess that is a risk that you have to concider when getting a predatory fish like that though. Sorry to hear about it :(
