sohal tang a must

always on ** at work
went into lfs to pick up some food
and i saw this beautifull must have sohal tang which the lfs had for a while (approx 5month) carefully inspecting him im so tempted to buy him but at a cost of $400 im gobsmacked y so pricey??


im very concerned about these tang since battling ich numerous time with 2blueys resulting in death
and at that price i would not risk it as of yet

has any other reefer got 1?

can u guys tell me are they easy to maintain n hardy in terms of parasite ich etc ...

i ended up walking out with a foxface lol
 
They are moderately hardy. The biggest problem with sohals is aggression. They can literally wipe out a tank. I wouldn't put one in a tank the size of yours.
 
ive seen a sohal hit 9+ inches in a 175 bowfront so a 6foot will not work for long term maybe an 8 foot but for the life of the fish id say a 12+ foot
 
this fish is the whole reason behind my wanting to do a large fowlr still working on my wife as to how important it is for me to have a new 200 + gal tank imo this is the pretty most impressive fish in the tang family just .02

yes it is most desired among tangs
the othe tang im mad about is achilles
but as i read best leave them where they belong int the ocean

oh it easy to convince the missus just say the 3 magic words everyday for 6month she will give in lol
 
I agree. I wouldn't house a large sohal in anything under 10 feet long. Even then it would have to be quite wide to keep him from killing fish. We have a 14" where I work and can't keep anything with him ( Chromis, tangs, blennies, nothing) He is in a 6 foot 224g all by himself and really needs a new home soon.
 
And then I see Sohal's all the time in 6 or 8 foot well stocked tanks where the owners say the Sohal is boisterous at best. From what I can tell it seems to be aggressive but more mellower ones can also be found. It's just more likely to be aggressive than other fish with a bad reputation. Again, just from what I read. I'd like to have one but I think I'll try a clown tang instead. :)
 
Upgrading from a sohal tang to a clown tang is going from the frying pan into the fire. I had one in a 350 gallon tank and it was clearly not a good idea.
 
I have a Sohal in my 240. I have had him about 14 months and he went from a skinny 3.5 inches to a 7+ inch fatso in that time. He is a wonderful fish, they are beautiful, personable, and active....He is the undisputed King of the tank though and I am certain will outgrow my system. He is rarely openly aggressive, but all the fish (and I have some aggressors in there) know better than to challenge him.....ever.

As much as I love this fish, I would not recommend one in anything less than an 8 foot tank. I will upgrade to 10 feet x 3 or 4 feet in a couple of years, I hope and think he will be fine until then.:worried2: Blue Zoo's owner (where I got him) said expect him to grow like a weed until 8 inches or so, then the growth will slow down dramatically, so far he hit the nail on the head.

Oh, and btw I would say this fish is not "bullet proof", but very hardy by Tang standards, particularly once established.
 
I have a Sohal and a clown Tang in my 300 gallon. I got them both very young and now the sohal is 7 inches long and the clown is like 5 or 6 inches. I have a powder blue tang and a yellow tang as well but the Sohal and Clown will bicker once in a while. Otherwise they are fine. I do have to get rid of one of them soon though as I just dont think its a good idea for much longer.
 
Both of these fish become progressively more aggressive, most likely, as they perceive their environment to be self limiting.
 
I just gave away a Sohal Tang......8.5 inch brat of a fish..He was such a brat....not because he was aggressive, well, not towards anything IN the tank, rather, things OUTSIDE the tank. Oh, and he was a brat too

No one could be standing beside me when I would be at the tank or he would slosh water out at the person standing next to me. It got so bad he had my floors wet from doing this because people were here looking at my tanks all the time. He acted JUST like a Cockatoo I had once.......gave him away too because of his possessive way he was when people were next to me.

I mainly gave him away because, well, I set out to sell him. BUt this gal on another firum expressed how she would love to have one for her 240g but was joke broke....I thought that was a hilarious way of puting that she coulldnt afford to buy him but wanted him.....so I told her she could just have him

He was, all in all, a good fish....Loved me to death and didnt bother anything in the tank.......he just couldnt handle other people standing beside me.....was fine if someone was standing at the tank alone or with other people.....

Have had this witnessed by MANY people......He was surely one of a kind

I just wanted him to be one of a kind elsewhere.......=)

and OMG on that price??? $400?????? LMBO!! Are they kiddin? I paid 120.00 for mine and he was the size of a chicken nugget when I got him....couldnt have been any older than 4 or 5 months

Man, what people wouldnt do for a dollar.....Im so glad I dont have the almighty dollar ruling my life.......its one thing to make a profit, but geeeez

Did this $400 fish expel gold chunks when nature called or what?

3 inches about $100 in LA if you shop around and be patient.
 
That 120.00 was including shipping

I think I bought him from BlueZoo Aquatics Cant remember It was either them, DrFosterSmith or VividAquariums
