Hey guys, I have a great relationship with my LFS owner and he has helped me with every step on building my tank. I had him order a sohal for me last week and it came in on monday looking extremely happy, eating a TON and no signs of ich. Hes about 2.5" and is currently the only fish in the owners personal frag tank at the store with no other fish. He wont let me bring him home for at least a month so we can make sure he is really healthy. That being said, do yall think I need to QT even after him being the only fish in the tank for atleast a month??? As of now i do not have a QT set up. Any advice would be amazing!!

Well, since you have already purchased him, advice about this fish would be irrelevant. With no other fish, your risk level of disease is minimal.

I'd QT him, no saying what he was shipped with. Just because he is in a tank with no other fish, doesn't mean there isn't any disease present. He is a host, that's all any disease needs and sohals are one tough hardy fish. He may bring in things that don't really bother him but could wipe out other weaker fish, especially when the sohal bullies them.

Unfortunately, your chances of a peaceful tank is also minimal. How big is it (the tank), by the way?

well dont kill me, its a 55g BUT the sohal will only be in the tank only for about 3-4 more months until my 180 is ready....This one fish is why i have gotten into the hobby sadly. My mom had one and i just love the damn thing!

Dude, youd be making a mistake. Even for a 180, it would be a terror. And if you are insisting, just wait until the 180 is set up. Sohals will be around in 4 months.

I had to remove one from a 350 gallon FOWLR because it was a horror. Buying fish for a tank that may never happen is a bad idea but as mentioned above 180 gallons is probably insufficient.

Belive me, my dad(which u may know Zarieguy) owns a 300g I have a 30g. He has a 75g sump under his 300. He bought a sohal like maybe 1 year ago, added it the fish was a monster and killed my mom's sailfin. My mom finally caught the sohal and now the monster lives in the 75 and will probably never return to the 300g.A couple days after my mom caught the monster we went to Pet Supplies Plus in finnally I pointed out a good sailfin so my mom has another one and he is huge!

So a piece of advice, never buy a sohal unless u want your tangs or any fish u like die.

Just to add a different perspective, I have a 5-6" Sohal in my 180 and he was a model citizen. Could get cranky once in a while but didn't harm anyone.

Sohals are beautiful tangs, but should be kept in a 180 at the minimum!

I agree 180 gallons and above. But as far as my expeirence goes. Sohols are usually not overly agressive tank leaders until they are challenged. When their alpha status is challenged is usually when they become complete terrors

Totally agree with this , I have one that was a model citizen when i first got him, QT and all .. He never made it to my display because at some point it snapped and decided to terrorize anything and everything except a maroon clown. I know have this A******** permanently stuck in my 72x30x15 prop tank >.<. This fish has chased other fish i'm trying to catch with a net and gone in the net after them after i've caught them were not even talking about other tangs. I've never seen another fish that's as aggressive. Only time i have seen these fish calm and peaceful is when there just flat out 2-3x bigger than anything around them. Best of luck.

Sohals will need at least 250gal.. if he is all by himself you might be able to do a 180 with a few chromis and corals.
