Solana tank owner thread.

Beautiful tanks MedRed & Forreal. Reminds me of my Solana days. Thing is sitting empty in my spare room after my recent upgrade to a 30x30x18 cube. Need to post my Solana setup for sale and get it out of the house!

Decided to clean up the ol' tank...

Do any of you guys have a trick for getting way down into the pre-filter box? I put some floss down there and now its way down at the bottom, wedged in there and its restricting my flow. Need to find something long and narrow to try and grab it with, and I have no idea what to use.

Wire hanger maybe??

Anyone have an opinion of moving a 34 Gallon Solana about half full of water? :eek2:

I have 2 moves ahead of me. In a little over one week I have to move the tank to my parents house, where my wife, son and I will be living for about 3 weeks until I close on my new house which is 600 miles away.

For the first move from my current home to my parents, I was considering removing half the water, some of the rock just sticking it in the car. I hate the idea of removing everything.

Also dabbling with the idea of just selling all the livestock at a stupid cheap price just so I know it's in good hands.

I made a basket of sorts out of ultra thin acrylic which allows me to stuff anything in that chamber and remove it at any point. It has made maintaining that chamber much simpler.

If I were you Id take the tank completely down and try and find a local reefer buddy who could hold your live stock in their tank for 3 weeks. then just make the 600 mile move and re-setup the tank at that time.

DONT MOVE THE TANK WITH 1/2 the water in it like you want too.. :eek1:

GL!

Hah, thanks.. I know it's a bad idea to move the tank with water. Unfortunately I don't have anyone local to take the livestock for the few weeks. I have moved a tank with water before but only a few feet. I certainly never stuck a half filled tank in a car and drove.

Maybe Brute containers - just offload and reload?

Brute containers/buckets & moving the tank empty or almost empty is probably your best bet.

Only things I move less than halfway full are my small 7.5g tanks. And even that sucked cause the water was splashing everywhere with every bump with 4" of water in the tank.

I just moved my solana a few weeks ago and it would have been nearly impossible to move half full. I would be afraid that the glass would break or crack due to all of the weight being uneven and shifting, not to mention carrying all of that weight. Even half full the tank would weigh more than 130 pounds, and that is just the water. If you leave the sand and any equipment in the back you have to add that and the 30 or so pounds of the tank itself.

I reccomend that you take everything out and move it in buckets and such. It took us a few hours to complete the move, but it was worth the extra effort in the end.

I would put the rock and corals in some homedepot buckets with half tank water I would dump the sand. mix some water and put everything back in at your parents place. repeat the process when you get to your new place although I cant imagine taking it all on a 12hr car ride . I would add all new sand when u get to your final destination... thats how i would move it... but i wouldnt move it i would sell it and start over :)

I hope this works. Here is a video of my spotted manderine eating frozen Mysis from a turkey baster. He has been in my Solana for almost 6 months.
