Solana tank owner thread.

I bought a pack of those filters for my new setup based on comments in this thread. They seem to work well, but I am not sure if I will continue to use them. The Chemi-Pure and Purigen take care of the main filtration and bulk filter material works well and can be cut more exactly. The Penguin filter is a little tight of a fit, but that is good to keep the filter media held in place. I am still figuring it all out though.

i'm still using purigen and chemi pure for chemical filtration. The pads provide my biological. I like them since they fit well and they don't clog. They are also ready to use out of the box without having to do any cutting or anything. They are kind of expensive though.

Anyone running pH probes etc in the back of their tank? I am worried that when the return pump is off, the probes will be completely submerged and be damaged?

I am not sure. I have a post on the Digital Aquatics support form, but wanted to see what the experience was of owners of our tank.

Thx also MedRed. Digital Aquatics have reported the same. Just wanted to be sure as I have not used probes previously and I make enough dumb mistakes to not avoid the ones I can. :)

If it helps any...I have mine completely submerged...I've always had it that way...

Ditto on that. Pretty sure mine is completely submerged too.

I need to get working on some chemical filtration in my Solana. Need to get Chemipure and Purigen soon.
Right now I just have a filter floss pad from a bulk strip of marineland material on top of the drip plate in chamber 2 and one of the stock carbon bags below the plate.
Also need to hook up my Phosban reactor one of these days - probably will try to put the pump for it in chamber three if it will fit under the water line.

I have my pump for my phosban reactor in chamber two and a bag of carbon sitting on top of the pump (for now)...

I have a Mag5 in chamber 3 pumping to my chiller and returning directly into the return hole in the false wall.

So that makes it a pump in every chamber in the back...chamber 1 = skimmer pump, chamber 2 = phosban reactor pump, chamber 3 = chiller/return pump.

LoneWol88: i have the stock pump laying around if you need. I live off Bruce B. Downs so if you like we could meet in the middle. Say Coral Corral. I can always make time for a trip over there.

Does anyone use a refugium on their Solana? If so can you post some pics? HOB or direct system. I am thinking about doing a refugium but dont have room for an HOB and was thinking about doing a direct system but not gravity fed. I am thinking about using 2 pumps (inlet and outlet) with check valves and having the system at a level below and beside the main display. Let me know if you see any problems with this. If you can post some pics of your refugium setups.

Thanks

What have you all done about the black pre-filter sponge? Mine seems to restrict water flow constantly causing the level in the back to get off... Seems like I would need to clean it constantly to not have a problem. When I do clean it, it does not even seem dirty? I have it off now, but the trickling water noise is a bit loud. What would work best that could go more than a day without needing to be cleaned. I'd ideally like something that could go for a week without cleaning.

I'm currently not using the blue filter pad and I'm not getting any trickling noise at all...all I hear is my vortech when it kicks it into high gear.

I removed that black sponge and use poly batting cut into strips, I hold it there with a paper clip and change it out every 4-5 days or so. If I don't use anything there I get a loud waterfall effect when the water enters that chamber.

Hope this helps.
