Solana tank owner thread.

So I've heard a rumor of Current going belly up...hopefully they dont as I still want a solana

According to someone I spoke with in the marine world, Current is just working on a very large product line-up in LED technology to make it a little more affordable. So that's why you aren't really hearing stuff from them right now. I couldn't imagine them going belly up, becuase EVERYONE has something current.

I removed that black sponge and use poly batting cut into strips, I hold it there with a paper clip and change it out every 4-5 days or so. If I don't use anything there I get a loud waterfall effect when the water enters that chamber.

Hope this helps.

Kevin

Where do get the poly material?
I took out the black sponge and its too loud...

I just added a strip of the standard filter pad material to the overflow. It is the standard stuff you can get in bulk rolls that is blue an white. I cut it about a half inch wide and inch longer than the black pad so it stays in place all on its own. Is quiet now... will see how long it lasts. I hope I can go a week and then will just toss in a new one rather than rinse it.

I pulled the blue filter pad since it was clogging up with detritus faster than I would like...which led to air getting trapped beneath it and water backing up above it. Last night I built a filter sock holder out of a piece of 1/4" PVC sheet. It fits a 4" sock perfectly and does a much better job of pulling out detritus and reducing microbubbles from the skimmer. I notched the back corner so water does not get restricted when the sock gets full...time will tell if I made the notch large enough.

Plenty of room in the sock to run a media bag too.

Hope the pic turns out OK.

That seems like a great idea! any clogging issues?

RyanN, Very cool idea! How long can you run before it starts to clog to the point of overflow?

Not sure I want to go that route now. I have some cheato in there which I really like to have. When I move in a few weeks I am thinking about putting an external fuge onto the tank mounted behind the wall the tank sits in. If I do that, no need for anything in the 2nd chamber and this would be perfect.

My stock filter pad idea failed. This morning my water level was pretty far down in the 3rd chamber and the display area was a 1/2" + high. The pad began to clog enough to prevent flow. Good thing I do not have an ATO hooked up yet.

There has got to be something simple to put in the overflow to quiet it down and do a little pre filtering? Or, is the overflow just too small to be useful for this?

Does anyone use a refugium on their Solana? If so can you post some pics? HOB or direct system. I am thinking about doing a refugium but dont have room for an HOB and was thinking about doing a direct system but not gravity fed. I am thinking about using 2 pumps (inlet and outlet) with check valves and having the system at a level below and beside the main display. Let me know if you see any problems with this. If you can post some pics of your refugium setups.

Thanks

I too am curious how others have created an overflow etc for fuge.

I am hoping to run my refugium in reverse, the ideal way. I hope to have space in a closet behind my tank to mount a small refugium above the DT waterline. That way I can pump from the DT to it and let gravity do the return. This is ideal as pods and such have less chance of getting killed on their journey to the DT by a pump. I'd really like to avoid using an overflow if possible.

MVlk,

I installed the sock two nights ago and rinsed it out twice on the night of the install (a lot of detritus had built up during the period I went without a filter pad). Right now it's still running fine but I won't have an accurate measure of "time to clog" until the next rinsing of the sock. The notch in the back of the holder is meant to allow water to bypass the sock when it gets clogged...the sock is wide enough so that only a small amount of water gets around it when unclogged.

I'm running an osmolator in the third chamber so I wanted a design that would not adversely affect the water level in the second and third chambers. Again, time will tell if I need to enlarge the bypass notch.

Ok, so here are some pics of my new setup, still a work in progress. I hung a 18" T5 fixture off the back with book shelf arms for added dawn, dusk lighting I really like the look. I plan on adding a refugium and changing the glass from the stand to something that I can't see through.

Ok I'm tired of not have actinics with the disco ball. Anyone have suggestions on a 150 or 250w halide fixture with actinics. Looking for $500 or less
