Solana tank owner thread.

Hey quick question. Have you had any issues with jumpers with the big holes that is in the bird neeting?

My diamond goby jumped out through the eggcrate cover I had and he must have just barely fit, so I would think it depends on how skinny the fish is!

how are you guys making these frames for the tops? Do you buy plastic of some sort, cut to length and then attach them in a square? What's the best way to make those?

Most garden supply/Nurseries have It as It's used In their trade FYI

MVlk Good call on the buffer and reasons behind the use of them, You have learned a lot my friend!

My BRS dosers are being ordered tomorrow. They actually just sent me an email that they are on sale. The BRS ones are ~$10 more than the Drews but I like the BRS labeled products. There price seems average for most dosers I have seen.

I'd lay of the Reef Buffer. It can cause some issues with Alk. If you have not already, I'd read Randy's articles on pH and water quality. Among his good information is the problem with store bought buffers and an important fact that a pH of 8.0 is really not an issue. Below about 7.8 is when you need to be concerned.

If you are adding SeaChem Reef Buffer, you are dosing already. You are basically adding ALK to your system with the SeaChem Reef Buffer. You can cause problems doing that if you do not know what your parameters are. Ph is not that critical. The ALK level is much more important to our systems. If your ALK and Mag are correct, then the PH should be fine even if it is a little low.

I agree with the others about the buffer. Nothing wrong with your pH at 8.0-8.1 as long as it's stable.

Thanks you all. The pH had been right below 8.0 for a little while, and I was also questioning my pH probe and the RKE that monitors it, but now I think its working correctly. The pH, with this buffer over the past few days has been keeping steady at 8.1 - 8.2, so I think I'm good, I won't add anymore.

In fact a few of you have been helping me with some of my doubts and questions, and I need to post up my parameters so you can help me determine if and what I might need to do or dose or maybe nothing at all.
So look for me to post those soon, I will do one before my water change, and one after, so we can see what might be missing or what is being done between water changes.

hey guys picking up my tank tomorrow. We have really soft heart pine floors and I was thinking about putting something under the legs. Can anyone tell me about the contact size of the legs to the floor with the manufacturer's stand? Size of a quarter? Bigger/smaller?

They have little plastic feet on them which I would recommend you remove. The legs are about 1" x 1" square. I took off the plastic feet and put the thick felt pads on the bottom of mine so that I wouldn't scratch the floor.

Yep, this is exactly what I did for my hardwood floors too: (quarter size is about right I think)

Chaeto is a common and a great start. You can use one of the JBJ Nano-Glos (I use them) or an Intank drop in light. Unfortunately a reactor that fits in the back chamber is pretty hard to come by now. Sapphire used to make one. You could run some GFO to drop phosphates with one. I'm forced to just put a little in a bag on the middle top drip plate.

Before adding my external sump, I had a bag each of ChemiPure and Purigen at the bottom of chamber 2. I then had cheato on top of that with light from a JBJ Nano-Glo. It worked very well.

How long did you keep the light on for the cheato, and was it with your display lights or opposite?

can someone show me some pictures of it...

You should skim back through the pages of this thread, and maybe a google search outside of this site, there are lots of examples out there.

You are looking for pictures of what exactly? The Cheato? The Light? The Skimmer?

Here is someone's cheato in the 2nd chamber:

Another good mock up and planning of where the stuff will go:

You might hold off before you put sand and LR rubble back there, I've been told and heard that was not the best idea for this part of the tank. Again, I think its been mentioned in this thread a while back, and they have some good reasons. In fact I know you don't want sand back there, it will just cause problems. The LR rubble is not as bad, but I think its not recommend either.
