Solana tank owner thread.

I am running carbon passively in the second chamber and will soon start to run gfo in that chamber too. Just throw it in a media bag and your done. No need for a reactor IMO. Not saying you cant run one.... :)

your tank looks great! I always run my nano cubes pretty much stock , seems in the smaller tanks , its kinda a "all in one" out DT IS out filter , fuge Etc... do we really need all these mods if we are running a nano reef tank?

Does the stock skimmer produce alot of micro bubbles for you guys. I put the blue foam pad at the top tray to create a bubble trap but I still have ALOT of micro bubbles in the display area.

My skimmer did while breaking in for a few days, I bought my system used from a local reefer. But after a few days it is skimming nicely and no bubbles. Actually skimming better than I thought it would.

I think the bubble in my tank must either be from the return pump or in the reaction in the back couple chambers. I shut off the skimmer for a day a while back and did not see a decrease in the amount of bubbles (like I thought I would).

Hey Tunze skimmer owners: Does the stock cup fit in the Solana, or did you have to buy a new cup?

Depends what chamber you run it in. I popped off the magnet ad made a stand for the second chamber and it fits perfectly.

I haven't heard of many people doing it any other way.

I apologize if this question has been asked somewhere else in the thread, but who is using a Warner Marine H1 skimmer on their Solana? The Sapphire skimmer I'd originally upgraded to is not working well (loud and producing weak skimmate), even after the mods expert at my LFS fiddled with it and rebuilt the impeller.

I've heard raves about the WM skimmer, but with my light fixture being attached to the stand by two metal rods (one of which sits behind the chamber that now holds the Sapphire), I'm wondering if I have room for a HOB model.

This question is for the custom StevieT cup users. I haven't yet gotten my cup in the mail but I do have my 9002. I haven' cut the magnet off as the skimmer easily fits in the first chamber with room to spare (without the Tunze cup).

My question is do I need to remove the magnet if using the custom cup?

Thanks.

Stock ATO bottles

Stock ATO bottles

:hammer:Wondering if anyone is using the stock ATO system, I just started having an issue for some reason the bottles dont let out any water even if the level drops well below like a few inches below the opening on the bottles and then it usually takes 4 full bottles to get the level back up. Im afraid this is going to cause to many swings in the salinity.

Funny thing is it has been working flawless for the past few weeks, other than having to fill them 3 times per day they were keeping the levels topped off. Any ideas?

I know I need to change to a better system, just trying to get by for a while we these.

Well, yea. How else are you going to secure it in place at the right depth?

no, you can just go to the lfs and buy a new magnet to use, or maybe even make some sort of bracket. Or u can cut off the magnet and reuse it.

Do you guys have any suggestions for quieting down the overflow? I think the main source of noise is water flowing thru the slits from the tank and falling down to the skimmer chamber. I tried putting in a sponge but that just seemed to back everything up.

Ok that answers my question. So people who are putting the 9002 in chamber one are removing the magnet to re-use it not because it is in the way. I have an extra pair of the exact same magnets from my Osmolator (mounted both sensors to one magnet pair) so I will not hack the 9002 up. I will simply glue the spare magnet I have onto the side.

As for noisy overflows...I am using a MJ600 for my return which means I'm not flowing more than 160 gph over the overflow. I also have my water level fairly high and with the stock black sponge in place it's all DEAD silent.

Without a filter pad it is very noisy. Only a filter pad has worked for me. I have tried every type I can get my hands on and the only kind I have found to work well is the heavy duty stuff used for pond filters. All other types clogged up in a few days. The pond stuff lasts almost a full week for me before I rinse or replace it.

It would be cool if one could DIY some sort of baffle to prevent noise. If I ever get some spare time I may see if a local reefer with acrylic skills can put something together for me.

The stock skimmer was way too loud for my taste, so I took the advice of many and replaced it with the tunze 9002. I moved the magnet to the long side and added the InTank cup. With these mods it fits perfectly in same chamber as the original skimmer.

I can't comment on performance because I didn't have the stock one long enough to judge it. However, the tunze is whisper quiet relative to the stock skimmer. Now the loudest piece of equipment is the MP10, which is completely tolerable.

Other good news today is that ammonia and nitrites are now at 0, and nitrate is at 20 - I guess I just need a water change. Temp hovers between 77-81. Is that too variable?

I'm only testing my skimmer quickly in freshwater right now so maybe that has an effect but I find the air intake to be very loud on my 9002. Any ideas about this?

That is an acceptable range for the temperature; mine has been fluctuating between 78 and 82 for a couple of years now with no ill effects.

Are you trying for a measure of mechanical filtration for where the water enters the back chambers or just to quiet down the noise? I have used the stock coarse black sponge that came with the unit and you can't hear my overflow at all. When I stir up the sandbed and blow off the rocks during water changes I'll turn off my ATO and stick some polyfill in there as well for about an hour to act as filter floss - when it turns brown and begins to back up the water in the display I'll take it out, rinse the black sponge, and everything's all good.

My other suggesstion other than the baffling would be to take some 10 mil (I think that's the thickness) PVC mat, and cut it in such a way that you can hang or clamp it to the top of the overflow and have it long enough to go beneath the water level in the tank so that the water coming in "slides" down it instead of dropping. I used this material on the outlet of my HOB skimmer with much success.

Hmm... This may work. I am going to try this out this weekend. Gonna use one of those thin cutting board sheets. (essentially just a thin piece of plastic) I have used those for other aquarium use before and they work well and are easy to get hold of. I think with a bit of creative cutting, it should hook onto the overflow slots, wedge to the bottom and make a nice slide. I'll post pictures if I get it working. I would LOVE to get rid of any clogging media in this area!
