Solana tank owner thread.

We use Phoenix 14k on our disco ball light and have had no issues. Our lights come on close to noon and turns off around 10:30 pm. We keep sps, lps & clams.
 
SO am I gonna be happy with a Sunpod 150mh over my Solana and be enough for a mixed reef (soft and hards) or should I look into higher output LED's.... I have a friend who is a tech-E and said we could build it... just need to get the parts.
 
well supposodly my lfs is able to get the new uvl bulbs i put the order in yesterday and should have them by friday!!!
 
Picking up my tank tonight along with a Sunpod 150 and getting a MP10w.

Is there any type of retro I can do on the Sunpod to add VHO's/PC's/LED's?

Any suggestions on what else I need to get her going?

Heater size? 100w? 150w?

Keep stock skimmer? or just upgrade now?

ATO? How long does the bottle last?

anything else I might need?

Was looking at a ReefKeeper lite... I had one on my last tank and loved the controls but it's really grown up since I last used it.

rck, Get and ATO system right away and ditch the bottles ASAP. They are prone to dumping their full contents, do not last long and suck in general. I'd suggest getting an RKL and using it as your ATO. (If I was starting over I would strongly consider the Apex now as well.)

The stock skimmer is probably fine for now. You can likely wait till you get more stocked before replacing.
 
Changed my Solana around a bit. All LPS, rics and anemones went to my 40g, so it's all softies now...

Your tank looks nice. Is that a green toadstool at the bottom left, right above the button polyps? It has a nice neon green color.
How many watts of MH lighting are you using? I ask because I have 250w over my 25g solana and my zoas don't open up fully like yours. I think I may have too much lighting on them. They are all on the sand. Any higher than 3 inches off the sand and they shut tight. I see you have your zoas up high. Thanks.

Thanks! Yup, couple of green toadstools in there, but they aren't completely open in the pics. It's actually a Sunpod 150w on there now, as I just sold my Sunpod 250w. I ran a 250w for a while, and everything opened almost as much under that. They seem to be opening and stretching a little more under the 150w trying to reach for the light.

The 150w is just temporary until my Lumen Max Elite, Radium SE and 250w Galaxy ballast get here next week. The 150w is just to dim to my eyes, I personally prefer at least 250w.

Anyone else (that's anyone other than me) using an Aquaticlife 115 skimmer in their Solana? Works quite well and produces a good dark skimmate. It fits in the 3rd chamber with the return pump leaving the first 2 free for media and chaeto. It won't fit in the first chamber.

how do you get it to fit in the back there in the 3rd chamber. I also have a Aquaticlife 115 skimmer too but i haven't use it in the solana yet. do you have any pictures?
 
Update...

Went ahead and just got the solana stand from DrFS... best price I could find it ($169)

Found a used RKL on nano-reef with 2 PC4's, SL1, temp and ph probes so now just need to add the float set-up from DA.

Skimmer is the last thing.... should I go ahead and just do it now rather than later... I hate pricking with them! Whats the best option?
 
rck... How old is the pH probe? If older than 12 months you may want to get a new one while you are ordering the float switch kit...

As for the skimmer, The stock will do fine till you start really filling out the tank. If it was me and I had the extra cash handy, I'd order a replacement right away. That is actually what I did. Not necessary though.
 
Just got my 34G Solana last week with the stock 150W Disco Ball. Been reading this thread for days. I know this light can keep sps but how far down can I keep them? I'm sure some lower light demanding birdsnest or montis would be ok low in the tank but how about acros? Halfway down maybe? Thanks in advance for any input.
 
sal9012, that's an awesome scape! everything looks great!

Can you guys help me out with lighting? I'm running the 150w coralife hang on right now, but it sits to high up for me, and makes access to the back chambers impossible. I want to get a new fixture but i'm not sure which one. I'd prefer MH, but i don't know where to find a sunpod, so any reccomendation works.
