Solana tank owner thread.

Good to know! Ordered mine today will be here Friday. What kind of filtration are you running in it? I am hoping by running filter floss, purigen, and chemi pure elite that it will make my water crystal clear and healthy. I have NO fish just a shrimp and snails and a few hermits and I cant get my nitrates below 40ppm. I do a wkly 5g change and clean skimmer and filter sponge and run carbon. I really hope this helps. I really want to add FISH!!!

Ooo , i like the sponge holder( dont get me wrong, the media basket is brilliant). I always hate sticking my fingers trying to grab the grimy sponge!

What is the nitrates of your water change water? We have no issues w nitrates/phosphates etc. We use floss filter in the overflow/in take, then a micro filter similar to a sock filter (cleaned weekly),filter floss and back into the tank. Our fish load is flame angel, hippo tang, six line wrasse, 2 clowns, and a neon goby. We do run carbon and occasionally run our skimmer.

Is purigen better then carbon? Someone be straight up with me. I run a air line mod tunze 9002 skimmer in chamber 1 with the black sponge filter in the overflow. Chamber 2 consist of filter floss with a bag of chemi-pure elite and a bag of carbon along with live rock rubble. Finally in chamber 3 with my heater, temp probe, and return pump( maxi-jet 1200)

I really want to get that sponge filter holder as mine is a pain to get out at times!

What about gluing a small piece of plastic to the 2 inside wall of the overflow chamber that would hold a cut out of eggcrate? Then your floss would be near the top surface sitting on the eggcrate allowing for easy access. Maybe I can take a picture of what I'm talking about.

My water change water is RO/DI Saltwater from my lfs. I also discovered a tiny bit of green bubble algae today. UGH!! Gonna remove it when I get home from work. Its only in one spot. I will post pics of my overflow on friday when I get the media basket and sponge holder.

ALSO, where do you guys have your flow pump? My MP10 is on the right side middle but about at the height of my rock. I am looking for the best placement. I notice detritus floating around and not being pushed into the overflow.

Thanks!

I'm in the process of changing things around and I may no longer use the rack. However currently I have Chemipure Elite in the bottom, chaeto in the center, purigen on the top, then above the media rack I have Marineland Rite Size A filter pads which are filled with carbon. They are typically used in Marineland's HOB filters. Now, I have a biopellet reactor set up and running but it has not yet started to do it's thing. It takes a few weeks. I also have a BRS reactor that I'm going to run GFO and GAC in but I need to get another pump first. Once these take hold, the media rack is going to be removed.

Interesting that you use the marineland pads instead of a carbon sock. Any reason as to why? Just curious. Also, has the chaeto kept algae out of your tank?

patm09-I was getting more than ro/di saltwater at my lfs? After testing w a strip test I would find nitrite levels higher than 20ppm. I would then confirm w a nitrite test kit if the strip test was accurate. Not only was I getting nitrites but also phosphate as well. For me the lfs wasn't keeping up w replacing filters in their ro system. Not saying this is the case w all lfs but I would use a 5 test quick dip test as a fast way to see if there might be any issues. Plus always check SG. We had at a different store give us freshwater instead of saltwater. Simple mistake that could have caused huge issues.

Dang Cfmx, you make me want to test all my water from fish stores now! That's nuts.

Here is just a quick update... Installed the Stevie T media basket with filter floss, chemi-pure elite, and purigen. Lights are always out when I leave for work so the real test will be to see how the water clears up when I get home. Got two HEALTHY and happy Ocellaris clowns and a skunk shrimp! Nitrates are at about 20, everything else is in check! picking up some frogspawn tomorrow lookin forward to that!

I like this pad because it has space to allow for flow if it gets clogged up. I run carbon and GFO in a reactor as well. The carbon in the pad is likely of little use. As for algae, the chaeto helps. I have it growing in 2 of the racks in the media basket. The real issue is skimming. The stock skimmer blows and as soon as I get my new one I hope to see algae dissipate completely.

Baby Solana

Baby Solana

We love our Solana so much that we purchased a used baby Solana (25 gallon ecoxotic). It has Ecoxotic Panorama LED and Stunner lights. Just thought I would post some pics since it's the same exact tank just smaller.

Started the tank w/ supposedly live sand in a bag. Did manage to find a bag that was freshly delivered and expiration wasn't until Jan 2013. lol
I did test the water in the bag and surprisingly no issues with nitrates or nitrites. (Seems like sand sitting in a bag would decay after a few weeks)

Added live rock from my existing 12 gallon nano and Solana to help seed the tank.

Water came directly from the Solana during water changes.

Will be interesting how much of a cycle we will have.

Tank with just the stunner lights on. Most likely will sell these since we already have a blue Panorama moduel to add in its place.

Hoping it will be enough light to grow some SPS and maybe a clam up high. What do you think?
