do you get a lot of trickeling noise since you chopped it? i would imagine a waterfall noise

With the black filter sponge in place (see the second picture) after doing the cut out, there is no additional noise. The water doesn't make it past the black filter sponge.

Without the black filter sponge, there is a lot of noise. In picture 3 you can see the water flowing out of the overflow box through the cut out. This water ends up on top of the 9002 and reduces it's ability to skim.

The black filter sponge is critical to success with this modification. It eliminates any additional noise and stops the 9002 from getting drowned by the overflow stream.

Are you still using the stock return pump?
How thick is your filter sponge in your second compartement?

I have the HOB refuge hooked up like your chiller. And i have additional live rock in the middle section under the sponge. I am getting some micro bubbles but i think it is from the rfuge pulling more water through the compartment and the Rio 2500 return pump the bubbles don't have time to escape.

I will get some pics up when i resize them.

Thanks for sharing

I don't use a filter sponge in compartment 2. The 9002 is very sensitive to water levels and a filter sponge in 2 will raise the levels over time as the filter gets dirty. I could also see a worst case scenario with tank overflow if filter material in 2 gets clogged enough.

I stayed with the stock return pump because I ddn't want to increase the flow of water through the filter compartments and risk a microbubble problem. I added a tunze 6055 (w/7091 controller) inside the tank to get increased circulation.

I didn't really want to have the chiller return into compartment 1 because of the potential for microbubbles making their way into the tank from the increased flow through the filter compartments. I set it up initially with the return in compartment 3, but dumping the chilled water right back on top of the pump feeding the chiller resulted in the chller short cycling (at least it seemed that way to me). That prompted me to move the return to compartment 1. Now that I've replaced the stock skimmer I could put the chiller feed pump in 1 and have the return dump into 3, but I'm not having a microbubble problem so I'm leaving things alone for now.

If you are fighting microbubbles, you might want to move the return to your fuge to compartment 3. I would suspect that between the beefed up return pump and the fuge circulation that you are moving water through the filter compartments too fast to allow the bubbles to blow off.

I replaced the stock return with a Rio Hyperflow 12 this weekend. The flow is fantastic although I have some vibration noise I need to get rid of. I choose the Hyperflow over the 2500 because it's slightly smaller and uses less watts even though it's about the same output. I'm not having any microbubbles.

I also run my chiller through the tank on a closed loop with a Eheim 1260.

I have tons of flow and the only PH I'm using is a Korallia Nano that I have positioned low in the tank to avoid deadspots behind the rock.

I haven't posted any pics for awhile--I'll try to do that soon.

Yea i have a lot of flow going through it, I guess i could give hooking up the stock pump a try and would still have the 2 k1's and the 1 k2 in the tank for flow. I currently have ZERO dead spots and i am really liking that.

I cannot run the fuge the other way or i would have it is the stupid CPR Aqua Fuge and that is how it is designed.

Here are the most recent pics of the setup. Stock skimmer. HOB Aqua Fuge Small, Intake is from the 3rd compartment and dumps into the 1st compartment. Tunze ATO measures in the 3rd compartment and adds into the overflow part of the Fuge. Pura pad in the middle compartment bud needs cleaned about once a day or it affects water height for the skimmer.

Screen top with Lufa mesh to keep even the small fish in.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Purchased the new Collection cup for the tunze 9002 from a guy on nanoreef.com hopefully it works out I was told it is nice because you can use the tunze 9002 skimmer in the 1st chamber and not have any clearence. I would really much rather have the skimmer in the first chamber so I can put my fuge in the second chamber and put the plate and filter pad on top of that for a clean look

yea he does a bunch of custom stuff

Whats his user name? I've been thinking of upgrading my skimmer with a Tunze or deltec. The thing holding me back with the tunze is the collection cup 1st chamber issue and cost on the deltec.

[violation]

Thanks for the insight I found who you were talking about emailed SteveT he answered within hours. I now have one on the way. Guess I need to order the skimmer now
