Solana tank owner thread.

I don't know those things specifically, but sometimes supplements and frozen food will cause the skimmer to do that. My skimmer was doing the same thing until I added a huge bag of carbon to my hob filter. Check to make sure the tubing is correctly attached as well, and that it's not clogged.

Was looking around at fish and came across a scopas tang... It says 30 is the min size. Will it be happy in a solana? if yes, will it be happy with 2 clowns and a coral beauty? I dont want to overcrowd...

Are there small tangs that are available for small aquariums? To clarify, are there any tang look alike that do well in small tanks?

That really wouldn't be a good idea. Take a look at the tang thread stickied in the fish forum for more information. Further, your tank is pretty close to being full as it is. Your clowns will get more aggressive and your coral beauty can get to 5 inches or more.

I found the thread... Not much I can keep (basically, no tangs). Time to focus on corals for now. I liked the look of it and thought , if I have a lot of slack, I could surely give a home to that tang - oh well...

Thank you for the reply:)

Did your water level change?
It raises only for 5-10min for water changes, can that be the problem?

I commend your restraint. You made the right choice, tough as it is.
I love tangs so I can understand how it was a hard decision but ultimately it's the right one.

So, I did add the wood frame lid. It took a little while to fit all of the cables and what not through the 2 cut outs to make it fit.

I decided not to use the glass hinges, and im just pushing removing the panes if i need to. The front pane is fairly small and has a little handle on it, so it's easy to feed and what not. If i remove that pane, I can slide the back one forward and it's completely out of the way for maintenance to the chambers. The sunpod rests on the frame... so I don't have to remove it to remove the glass panes... so much easier!

I no longer have any dribbling, and I have peace of mind that the tank is completely covered. I performed a water change on Saturday. I left to go out of town at 5 am monday morning and returned thursday afternoon. The tank looked normal. I looked under the tank at the 5 gallon ATO reservoir to see how much water it'd used. It was still filled up to the brim! My first reaction was that the ATO had filled up the tank to the tube and it'd back siphoned into the reservoir. I took a peek into the back of the tank and it was still at the perfect level. The wood frame kit had virtually eliminated my evaporation!

I've given up the rimless look, and I'll have to clean the glass once every week or two... but I'm happy with knowing my jawfish won't be carpet surfing, and evaportation will be cut way down.

P.S. I've not had any issues with overheating with it either. I have the AC set to 70 degrees. My tank starts at 77-78 in the morning and warms up to 80-81 by lights out.

Have you thought about making a screen to keep fishes from jumping rather than using that glass/wood frame...kinda defeats the purpose of the look of the tank with their wood frame glass top...

doesn't bother me at all... and i hate evaporation...
I've seen a couple of people still talk about losing fish, even with a screen.

do any of you solana owners keep clams on the sandbed with a 150w sunpod? I am talking specifically about maxima teardrop on the sandbed (not on a rock)..

Do I need to step it up to a 250w or 150w mh will be fine?

Thanks

I just got a clam (crocea)
about less then a month ago
i have it down at the bottom with
4x24 T-5's and it's doing great!
Hope this helps.

Thank you very much. I think it helps... I think t5s are comparable (i know, too many variables but it will be on the sandbed directly below)... Thank you. If anyone else wants to chime as well - please do :)

I previously kept a crocea on the sandbed of a 21" deep tank with a 175w MH and it did very well. The clam was off to the side and the tank only had one bulb over the middle...
