Some corals are starting to lose tissue.

Guys I need your advice on this particular matter. A few months back I started using pappone. I already have a nice fish load. Never had any problems with algae or anything. I am not putting pappone down because it did what it was suppose to do but I also had other problems that came with it. I have cynao growing on my rocks and diatoms on my sandbed and hair algae. I have been doing weekly water changes and I just ordered some chemclean to remove the cyano. I have good water flow with my Tunze. What I have noticed is that some of my corals are starting to lose tissue and receed until they eventually turn white. I run a phosban reactor and my water parametes are:

Amonia 0, Nitrates 0, Nitrite 0, CA 420, KH/ALk 8.3/2.97, Mg 1290.

What could the problem be? I have stopped using the pappone and I am only feeding my fish.

Test for phosphate in the tank and comming out of your ro unit. Do you have a cleaning crew in the tank? I'm not saying it can't happen, but I have never seen cynao growing in a tank with 0 nitrates.

Ahh, the old human growth hormone fad added to blenderized fresh seafood with a shot of sugar. You might want to check phosphates also. There is also a very high likliehood that you are having issues due to elevated organics, something you can't really test for easily and would also be indicated by your cyano problems. IMO, cut out the feeding for a bit, and make those water changes large ones along with the use some carbon along with the chemiclean until things start balancing back to normal. Then slowly start feeding again, however, I'd drop the sugar and HGH from the recipe

I did a large water change yesterday. Prior to the water change I stopped using the pappone about 3 weeks prior. Things a slowly getting back to normal. I only feed my fish now.

Glad to hear things are getting better. Good things only happen slowly, so keep up with the water changes...I've found they will do more for you than any of the "methods" out there

Bill, its generally the huge amounts of phosphates in the blended shellfish that causes problems, not the sugar/hgh.

Read what I wrote again, I did mention checking phosphates Heavy feeding of any food is always good for adding nutrients. I also wouldn't be so quick as to rule out adding sugar and Human growth hormones as being a potential for problems. Yes, some people seem to claim incredible success with them, but I've also seen plenty of people posting problems with those methods as well.
