You say you took the pics without a flash with a D70, however my flash seems to always open when I try and take shots with my d70.

Did you mean you dont use an external flash, or do you set it in a manner that the flash doesnt work.

I really need to take a look at my manual again, add it to the list of a million and one things to do.

I always shoot in manual mode, not in the program modes or automatic. This way I can control all my settings manually for all types of conditions. In manual mode the flash will not pop up.
