Some new fish...

Well the scribbled is totally upside down in a piece of PVC, comical looking really, but sad. He is still breathing but no movement besides his gills, otherwise he is just sitting upside down in a 5" piece of pvc. Poor guy, I'm pretty sure he will be dead soon.

I read that some people will needle them at this point to try and save a fish. Sometimes it works, others not......what do you have to lose at this point? Poke poke! What if it worked?

Well, I dont think it's air stuck in there, it's slowly developed and gotten bigger and bigger. If it does have a chance to live, I think poking it would pretty much end that.

I dont think I'll get a new fish from LA.

Someone ran a red light Sunday night and hit my wife while she was in my truck. Insurance should cover everything as it wasnt our fault, but I'm sure there will be some bills coming up that I have to pay at least initially before I get refunded, so I'm not going to spend any money on fish right now and the $400+ from LA I can just stick right back in the bank account. I'll worry about fish later.

The little Saturn that ran the red light got pretty jacked up.

Anyway, I'll wait at least a couple weeks to see what is going on with insurance before I buy any high dollar fish.

Oh my god man! Since you didn't mention it I'm assuming she's ok right? That accident looks like it was nasty and I'm really glad nothing worse came out of it (assuming that your wife is alright of course).

Also, I'm sorry to hear about the fish-I was pulling for him the whole time. I'll keep keeping my fingers crossed though.

Wow is right, puts the scribbled situation into perspective. You've got bigger things to worry about. How is Mrs. Recty?

Yeah really, is she ok? You didn't mention that! Hope everything is alright. Forget about fish for now! Hope insurance does cover everything and you don't have to pay a dime! Goodluck.

Hah, I forgot to say she was OK. Thanks for the concern guys ;) She is doing fine, she didnt have to go to the hospital. The other lady got out with a bloody nose and her head hurt, so they whisked her off to the hospital. She was just getting loaded up in the ambulance when I got there.

Anyway, when you stop real fast, your body takes a beating even with a seat belt on and airbags... so my wife is very sore but she is going to live, so that's what matters. Her ankles are messed up, slamming forward makes a lot of accident victims have bad ankles for a while. She has been Xrayed from head to toe though and nothing is broken, just a lot of stretched and bruised muscles.

I rented 14 movies at Blockbuster tonight ;) She is going to be home for at least a week.

So I got home with the movies and my angel was definitely dead. He was doing really bad when I left. I held him upright with a rag, in front of an pump outlet so he had a little water going past him and he didnt have to try so hard to breath. After about 5 minutes of that, he actually seemed to be coming around. I let go of him and he moved around the tank real slow but like he was blind. I watched another couple minutes and then he just started spazzing, it was a fishy version of a heart attack or a stroke, who knows. He zipped all over, smashing himself senseless on the sides of the tank, stuck all his fins straight out then one last shake and his body never moved again. He twitched his mouth a couple times and I had to leave to get stuff for my wife, but I was sure I'd come back to a dead fish and I was right.

So anyway, I played doctor a little bit tonight, I wanted to see what was causing that bump.

Here you can see the normal side, still a little bump MAYBE but I think that's just from the other side of the fish being on a hard surface.

Here is the bump side.

So I sliced into him and the bump almost immediately went away... no liquid came out either, no worms, no weird festering ooze, nothing, just air.

I went ahead and peeled it back and looked and it was just normal in there.

I went ahead and looked down below it as well just to see, but nothing looked amiss at all.

Catching salmon and halibut like I do in the summer, I'm used to dissecting fish but this was hard to do.

Anyway, it smelled really bad when I started cutting into him, it's like he had a gas bubble built up that was in there rotting away, I guess. I'm not sure what the bad smell came from, but it was pretty rancid when I first poked the knife in.

Whoa...its not everyday you see a cut up scribbled angel. Glad Mrs. Recty is ok, 14 movies!!! Geez!!!

So do you think it was just an air bubble? When divers needle a fish, are they really just sticking a needle into the fish, hoping to puncture the right part? Wonder if you would have poked the fish where the bubble was? I just find myself weirded out by that, I don't know if I could just stab a fish, unless I was spear fishing :) Sorry about the angel, hopefully the insurance mess will be over quickly and you can get back to getting more angels :D

Yeah, I think it was probably just an air bubble... I wish there had been an easy way to verify that while the fish was still alive, I would have poked it with a needle on a hope that it would recover.

I think when a diver needles a fish they are taking a pretty good risk, but yeah, they always aim for the same spot, where the swim bladder is.

Yes, I hope the whole insurance thing is over quickly too but I've been speaking with a couple of people who have been through accidents and it's never a good idea to settle early, wait at least a couple months and make sure the person is really OK, then settle. It might be a while until I get a couple more angels, but we will see.

Wow, didn't know they really just take a needle and hope for the best! That is risky! Yeah, best to wait and make sure your wife is ok. I know you have I think up to 2 years to press charges? That's what it was when a lady in a minivan blew a stop sign and hit me on my gixxer! I was ok though and never pressed charges, but in the end had to fix my bike myself because of stupid cops.

Well goodluck with everything, sorry about the accident and angel, hopefully all will be well in time. Maybe you might get some settlement money and get that upgrade tank :D

Well, I'm renting on the 2nd floor of an apartment complex, 210g was about the biggest I was willing to go ;) Even if I had a lot of $$$ sitting around I wont upgrade, gotta wait until I decide to buy a house.

I'm not worried about the whole insurance thing too much, it just takes time to settle out and unfortunately I wasnt planning on waiting on ordering fish ;)

Glad Mrs. Recty's all good :)! I'd never heard that about ankles hurting after an accident before-is that just from being slammed forward so hard? That damn inertia!

The way you describe your angel just before dying-the insane rapid erratic swimming-is the exact same way that Bella (the singapore) went out. I wonder what actually causes that-heart attack or stroke like you said or some last minute panic response or something else. Is that a common way for fish to die?

That's so strange that it was just an air bubble. Are scribbled's deep water fish? I wonder if needling him could have saved him. I guarantee I wouldn't have had the nerve to try it though.

Yep, even though she had on a seatbelt and the airbags deployed, she still had her feet on the ground and as you get thrown forward, all your weight slams into your feet basically and your ankles are the weak point in the chain. I had never heard of that either, but the chiropractor she is going to told her that it would probably be hurting the next day and he was right.

The scribbled shouldnt have been deep water, I dont think it would have been needled to raise it up. Needling in my tank might have saved him though, who knows. You've got to deal with the possible infection afterwards from having a needle poked through the skin and muscle, so even if it temporarily saved him, he might have died anyway.

Well I don't think a few more gallons would hurt. A 240g would only be 30 more gallons but the weight would be distributed over a 8x2 instead 6x2. If you replace your height with width, then it would be better for the fish an not so much much weight (if you went a little bigger) but in a bigger footprint.

Yeah, should be good. I actually just found out today the lady who hit my wife wasnt insured, neither was the car she borrowed... so actually that makes it easy, at this point it's just our insurance company we have to deal with, not another one.

It's state law in Alaska to have uninsured motorist coverage, so we're going to be just fine I think.

I'm sure there could be a couple hitches down the road but within a couple weeks I'm hoping it's all starting to settle out.
