Well it been about a month or so since I've been able to get to RC...just wanted to share some new pics..

Couple of cap...

What are those three teal/blue pieces in the middle of the fourth picture? Which one is Rich's "Jenny will kill me if I frag it one more time" Stag?

Can you come take care of my tank for a month ??

WOW , looking great , I have never seen caps looks so great. Usally you only see one or two shelves but that is awesome !

It just became my background !

The one on the left that is starting to grow on the glass is the Fatsuki bali blue (aka. JWKMIIFIOMT), the large one is the middle is Tim's Paletta baby blue, the third is a piece I got from Gabe (Jonovan02) when he was moving..he called it a Tyree super blue. However, I don't think it's the tenuis but rather the ultimate blue stag. Then the little nub is a piece of Org. Tort. The white balance on my camera is off, and things come out a little green and yellow with a lot less blue, so all of those corals are a lot bluer in person.

Thanks for the compliments guys...I was doing some reading in the SPS forms, and there is a great thread about faded colors that got me thinking about the availabity of nitrogen and carbon sources in my tank. I think because I was feeding the two fish I had very little and doing lots of water changes (about 25% a week) I was running very nutrient poor,. So about a week ago I got some amino acid suppliment from John and this week picked up two more chromis. I've also started to feed a very fine high protein mush a couple times a week to feed the SPS more. I've seen an immediate positive response in my LPS, and I'm hoping to get deeper richer color out of my SPS with increased growth rates.

What bulb combo are you using David? I noticed much more richer colors come in once I quit using the "sun" bulbs ie the 6000k or GE's 6500k. Great for keeping the blue tips blue but just too much PAR Im thinking for most everything else. Just a thought, I say that becuase it was like night and day after a few weeks of them being out.

over the main tank, I'm running two aquablue pluses, and three actinic pluses. I had a sun bulb that I tried for a couple weeks about six months ago, but quickly took it off as I was losing a lot of color on the corals under it.

I'd be curious to see your reaction if you took one of the actinic+'s off for a true Actinic 03. I see to possible(not definate) things that could happen, one:The true act. tones down the overwhelming blue factor and brings out the greens and purples that the act+ dont . I noticed when I was all act+ the reds and oranges really popped but they make the greens kinda yellowy. Its all relative and thats what there ultimately suppose to do because of the spectrum peaks they hit. So combining the two you would have a broader peak range being hit with more higher degrees of variant spectrums, giving you the best of both flourescing worlds and color refraction. Two: the lessening of the higher par values and substituting it for a lower true actinic bulb may give your corals a break and allow them to true up there own colors.

I could be totally wrong and it be exactly as you speculate about the feeding and nutrition. But as far as ratios go you have much more light than me. Im still using the cheap indiv. reflectors(not even tek) so you have that much more penetration than I do. My tank is also deeper, and theres not one high light coral that Ive come across that I cant keep down at the bottom, so that makes me suspiscous of too much light possibly.

And a guess from out in left field, your not using aluminum based phosphate remover are you?Or have you within the past 6 months?

rebalanced the white balance, and got some more accurate pics the other day...

This one is for you Tim...remember how I was telling you how the poylps on my Org. Tort were clear, while all the pic I've seen they are typically brown...here is a pic (with the a branch of the cali. on the right)...had to zoom and crop so it's a little blurry..

And here are some really cool zoas that Xia gave me the other week..really cool..(I've still got your zoas for ya...with a new one starting to grow..give me a call so we can hook up..just not monday...got class)

have the majority of the corals colored up any with your new feeding/dosing regime? the OBT looks just a tad bleached and maybe thats why the polyps are clear? from the looks of things, you're getting pretty good growth :D

Since adding the new fish and the increase in feeding smaller particulate foods, it's deff. gotten darker...especially around the tips of the coralites. It's a little darker in person, but still no where near as most I've seen. I would really love to see a full spectral chart, one that includes the near IR and UV spectrums, because I'm really starting to think that one of the reasons my T5's give me such different colors is a lack of UV. It's not that I don't get great looking color, I mean in person I've got some just outrageous bright baby blues. It's just that I've seen what some of the corals look like under MH. My Steve Elias for example, it's a really bright baby blue all the way though, and you can only see geen when looking down fromt the top. When ever I've seen this coral under MH it's mostly just the tips that are blue, and they have green bodies. I'm just starting to think that they are lacking some of the pigments that the acros are using for UV protection.

I really think your on to something David, but for the opposite reasons. Blue would be the UV protectant color for that coral, usually bright blues, pinks, purples and reds are the defining colors. My reason for thinking this especially in your case is the reviews that Ive heard from users of the 24" 'rs, out of all the lengths these are the most bright and intense speaking in terms of ratio of output/bulb length. Not only are you banging the light output, but you have top notch reflectors which makes you pretty elite on PAR values. But on top of all that you have a fairly shallow tank, AND on top of that you have your corals pretty high up in the tank(that is not very deep).

Was very similar for me when I first tryin different configs and I was more concerned with PAR than spectrum. Any coral that had blue normally was sky baby blue in my tank. So, I took the GE out. Helped big time, but the greens were still somewhat elusive, then I took another "day" bulb out and put the Tru 03 in there. Major help. So, now I feel I have the spectrum dialed in, it's come to my attention that theres still room to beef up my output, which I agree. That's where I start adding in some Ice Cap reflectors. I still am running cheap individual reflectors that are not true parabolic reflectors, so I beleive that will be the ticket for me personally. But if theres anything you saw of mine that you liked or thought looked a lil better, less light would be the reason. Thats of course everything else was pretty similar like water chem, flow, filtration.

Damn dude, this thread pops up every couple weeks and I keep pluggin the same damn advice:rolleye1: Sorry man, I sound like a broken record, guess itd help if I read my own comments on a thread more thoroughly :/

At least you can't say Im inconsistant though!!LMAO :lol2:

LOL...for the most part I only get internet on the weekends...not sure why, but it seems that is the only time whoever has the uprotected wireless router around my apt. is on...so I only get to get on RC once a week or two...but still Justin, it's always good advice...I have thought about doing something with the lights that would kind of raise them up a bit. I was thinking instead of putting the lights over the tank in a flat manner, I could arc them, since I've got 5 bulbs it works out well, with the center bulb being about 4" further off the tank than the outter bulbs...if done correct all the individual reflects would also form a large parabloic reflector giveing even more dispersion, but would be a little less intense..
You know something funny though...I put these bulbs in back in Feb. 06, and after over a year running I'm getting some of the best color and growth...I'm really not sure if I want to replace the bulbs..lol..
