Many of you have been helping me with feedback and advice on my equipment purchases and I appreciate it! I've got my 90 back up and running for about a week now. I went with a lot less rock than in the past, but really like how it came out. Sorry it's a bit blurred, I just messed with the sandbed. I'll post a better one once it settles down.

This is the back of my setup. There is a 20gallon homemade sump. I have an eheim pump ordered for the return.

Checkout my homemade algae turf scrubber :) This thing use to grow a lot of hair algae. I may try to sew on some of my hair algae from my other tank to help seed it.

I'm waiting on my reefbreeders photon 48 led light. I'm ordering two new eheim heaters. This thing is evaporating quickly, so looks like I'll be ordering the Tunze auto top off unit. And I bought an intelli-feed auto feeder. I have two Jebao WP-25s coming in that I'll hook up to a wavermaster pro that I bought used. So lots of new toys for me!

Which brings me to my skimmer questions. I have an older coralife super skimmer, the only skimmer I've owned, so I have no comparisons. Even on the lowest setting, it's producing a ton of white bubbles and is overflowing. Is this to be expected because I've newly set up the tank? Should I even have the thing running right now? I'm just ghost feeding. I do have carbon and phosguard sitting in the sump right now. I'm thinking maybe I should try pulling it off and running it through a bucket of water & vinegar to give it a cleaning - think that would help? Right now I just feel like I'm losing a bunch of good salt water.

If I do have to buy a skimmer, (what do you think?) I'm not even sure where to start from a research perspective. So I'm going to take it high level here, in sump or external? What are the pros/cons for a system like mine? Then I can start looking at specifics. I see a ton of brands out there and no clue what's good or not these days.

Thanks all!

Never had any luck with those skimmers always have micro bubbles and the are very hit or miss could work good today and overflow tomorrow get a cone skimmer you will never regret it

Octopus skimmers are good. I would depending on budget get a model higher than the nwb model. They skim but very sensitive. I guess since you have a ato it may not be as bad.

I've had the same on/off experience with this skimmer. It does look like I'll need to upgrade. I read in another skimmer thread that cone was the way to go.

I did see people liking the reef octopus as well.

So what's the difference between putting one in my sump versus hanging it off the back?

Ct I have had a few your skimmers and really it depends on bio load , maintenance you plan on doing .......I don't think cones make that big of a difference .....it's all about the pump....

Looks nice!! I like my Avast Marine CS-1 skimmer. Build it yourself and save some $$. I also got the Swabbie and Davy Jones skimmate locker.

Here's a pic with it cleared up, much better :) It's getting there...

And regarding the skimmer, I let it run through vinegar water all day, made no difference. Looks like I'll be researching skimmers. Not sure I'm going to have any bonus left to spend at FFM!

I went with the Tunze 9410. Great price through affordable aquatics and I'll have it early next week. I was starting to get into analysis paralysis with all the options so I just pulled the trigger to get it off my mind. Hopefully no regrets!
