Some progress on my 68g. Standpipes, foam, gfci...

Glued my standpipes together:

They're kind of short, but that's as big as my overflow box is. I really should've made the overflow taller...

Here's the whole I drilled on the tops, I may need to modify this:

How little room I have setup for them:

Here are the return street elbows, yes I know there's like a 180 turn there, but I'm not concerned about flow of the returns at this point. I painted them black =)

Here's the 1" thick foam I cut for the stand / tank:

I'm going to keep the bottom of the tank bb, and seethrough, so it'll look like I have a white sand bottom because of the foam.

I installed my GFCI with that outdoor cover so no water can get in =) I will connect my two DC8's to it as well and have them up high out of the way of water, and I will also construct something to keep them dry as well just in case.

All I need to do is drill holes in the floor to plumb the cooler, and then my tank stand can be put in place, then the tank stacked on top.

Nice job. I would use white cutting board on the bottome to prevent rocks from falling and breaking the glass. It will have the same effect, though it will get covered in coralline after a while. To make this look better I have zoos, GSP, and rics on my "starboard" (actually cutting boards from traget cut to fit).

Hey Mark,
The tank is actually acrylic, so the rocks falling won't do much damage in terms of breaking the tank... scratches yes =X I am probably going to make my rockwork into about 3 or 4 big pieces with some hydrocrete and plexi rods so it's super stable and won't fall over.

I think with a BB i'll get corraline anyways. I'm thinking of doing a 1/4" sand bed just for the reason of keeping coralline off. Maybe some critter that will keep shifting the sand around too...

Your tank was amazing mark! I remember the zoos and such on the bottom, looked great.

Looks good! Can i ask where you got the 1'' foam from?

I got it from home depot. Then I cut it with a super sharp razor knife.

The insulation is neat, it's water resistant, fire resistant, termite / pest resistant, and all that good stuff =)

sure no problem =) Look for it in the insulation area. In most home depots it's on the back wall of the store, near the lumber.

Wow what's with the artsy fartsy pictures all black and white ;)

lol i knew someone would say something =)

don't you like? hehe.

Well first I thought you simply used black, white & grey fittings, then I realized how unnatural all the colors are, so yeah.

yeah, everything's white and black, with grey sched 80 bulkheads... the only thing that was colorful was the brown cardboard box I use to paint things on in the backyard, and the hardwood floor so I just decided to be all fancy and go black and white.

hehe you're a funny one mike.

Tight, I love my HOB overflow, not too common with acrylic.

aren't they called external overflow boxes? HOB sounds like the siphoning kind (*shiver*)

Yeah, that's what I meant to say.... I have the same setup on my tank with the dual standpipes, one I run slightly backed off with a ball valve the other is wide open. Completely silent when dialed in with no bubbles/splashing. It's odd that not more acrylic tankmakers build with external overflows. I understand they have a higher failure rate, but I wonder how much higher if done correctly.
