some progress pics of in wall build

when i set tanks up i like some sand under the rocks ,like 1" so the rocks have something to stabilize them and take out any hot spots of pressure on the bottom glass .
what i'm speaking of is the horizontal wood at the upper edge of the tank between the tank and the doors . its a 180 gallon tank and is pretty deep and when you have to reach over the wood trim to reach into the tank it will be in your way especially when you try to touch the bottom of the tank . you will find that you will be using some tongs to get to the bottom .
the overall "look" is great so leave it as is for sure .i build a lot of canopies and usually present this to customers ,look verses functionality and the trim look could be built into the doors . just trying to help not criticize in any way and the whole room is looking great as it looks beautiful for sure .

Ahhhhhh I see what u mean now. Yeah Def deeper than i like. No worries, any help is appreciated :) and Thanks

your correct from the picture views but how will you then get to the front ? i'm not here to put her tank down and was just pointing out something i saw and deal with daily and now i'm sorry for opening my mouth .
the tank and room look great ,lets keep this tread on track

Don't be sorry,Actually to be honest I never thought abt it being deeper because of that so after I knew what you were talking abt I got my step stool and I'm like :headwalls: lol Its a lot deeper than I thought. I'll need a bigger step stool and leaning over the top of the tank to get full access
were were you before the panel went up?????? lol JKJK Thanks for all the input though much appreciated :)

i found out years ago when i built a canopy for a client and had a 6" piece there and then got the service contract . oops that is still fun today cause he wont let me take it out and i even told him i would do it for free ,lol
like i said though it does look awesome and you will figure it all out for sure and i wish you the best !

Yeah lol I never thought abt that 6" board sometimes you think you got everything covered and yeahhhhhhh :headwallblue: thanks

nobody should be offended by suggestions.

I wanted to post this earlier somewhere in the URS forum, but it's often difficult for an aspiring reef aquarist to discern the importance of certain suggestions. (I'm NOT implying that Shawna doesn't know what she's doing.)

That extra ledge in the front of the aquarium won't turn out to be a welcome addition, but at least she has access through the top front.
Some people have in-walls with NO top front access. (What a PITA!)

I would strongly suggest NOT allowing ANY sand between contact points of glass and rock. Place the rock directly on the glass with as few contact points as possible. IMO/IME this is an important decision. I don't make my recommendation on a whim. This is why it's easier to place rock in the aquarium before any sand.

okay Shawna, i want to assure you that i really want you to have a good experience with this tank and because of the fact that you have so much invested in the wood work within the room i can make a suggestion and hopefully it will be taken only as me trying to better your current set up which will work out for sure as is . it looks as though you could have the contractor remove the cross brace and either build it into the current doors or make a set of new doors . from the quality of craftsmanship that it takes to do what you have there it should be easily done but i cant tell how the cross brace is built so i may be wrong . i really think you will be so much happier if you can get into the front of the tank without any obstacles and you will have a much easier time feeding and more importantly cleaning the tank . its your tank and i will not further push the issue but think you really will be happier as i have been there and done that before i promise you .
i used to own an auto collision repair shop and i cant tell you how many times throughout 20 years that i had to do something over especially the final sanding and prep work . oh so many times when restoring an old car that you think something was perfect and then find some tiny thing that just wasn't right and it may take a couple of days for me to get back to where i was .i don't think that being said will really help though but i just had to say it i guess .
either way it will be yours and certainly it is beautiful and a great fish room will that you will enjoy for many years to come !

you will quite happy either way but it will be much easier if he can hook you up with a couple of "tweaks" on your room and then it will be smooth sailing !
