Something you don't see everyday!

Thanks Kurt!
I'm surprised you don't cancel your vacation to rear them... I would be tickled purple if mine spawned! :D

 I know right!

..but 2 weeks sport fishing in South Florida is a tough one to cancel.

I'll be able to get these 4 to dry foods (for my babysitter) prior to leaving so.... I can only hope they keep laying.

Congrats on the success! Very interested on the outcome of those 4 fry. Tagging along!

Thanks!

The 4 fry made it about 18 hours in the larval tank. Really have no idea as to the cause, everything was in check AFAIK. Such a small group to work with so I am not looking into it very much. Parents laid a new nest that same night (May 29th) which is larger in size. I also removed a large hungry Coral Banded Shrimp from their tank in the hopes of having more eggs to hatch tomorrow night (June 5th). I think she may have chowed down on the eggs after I collected my original 4 "day before the hatch babies". In any case I am planning on a Saturday night hatch / pre hatch. Larval tanks are ready to go, rotifers are stocked in huge numbers. If I pull enough fry I may split the batch up between two tanks. Thinking there may be some temperature / lighting protocols I need to work out with these guys. This batch will be my last shot before vacation prevents me from pulling more. Hopefully without me busting things up the parents will be able to get their groove sorted out with laying new nests.

Love the avatar Anampses Feminus.....drooool, is it yours?????

Take Care

I think I've read somewhere that spawning adults (not sure if it were clowns) eat their first couple batches. So I'm not surprised if the coral banded shrimp ate them either...they'll eat anything they can catch!

While you're drooling on my fish I'm double drooling on yours. I'm hoping to obtain a wild pair in a month or two if possible for my new tank.

Looking fwd to updates from your next batch of eggs. :D

Looks like what I thought to be a hatch on day 7 rolled onto day 8 with 2 fry collected and plenty more on the rock for tonight. So this time around it looks to be 9 days in the cooker before a hatch. We'll see tonight!

Got about 30 fry last night. If they make it for a week I'll start getting some pictures out. Until then....

take care

Congrats Kurt! Raising babies really epitomizes the old saying "one day at a time".

Indeed!

Funny part is that I don't even look into the Tomato / GSM / Perc larval tanks until day 3, just let 'em run there respective courses.

but these new guys, I cannot keep out of the tank for more than 30 minutes in a stretch!

Someday you will tell people "oh, that tank? It's full of those 250 fully barred Latz babies. I don't even look at those until day 6 or so. Now my McCulloch's - man I can't take my eyes of them!"

I can't wait for that day!

...but not anytime soon. Lost all 30. They made it about 18 hours! Water was pristene, temp started at 77 and gradually went up to around 80. Not thinking this was the culprit. Rotifers were aplenty, maybe too many??? Maybe the lighting is wrong. I use a 65 watt actinic about 12 inches from the tank lit 24/7. Sides are not blackened. Might try to cardboard up the sides and raise the light up when I get back from vacation. Cannot think of what else it could be....

:( Something to look forward to in July I guess.
