I have scaled back from 14 to 6 drops a day on the MB7 and the changes are noticeable. The glass stays cleaner for a longer period of time, and the sand has become whiter can. I can now confirm that over dosing on MB7 causes excess brown biofilm.

For everyone using MB7 I would recommend that you not go over the instructed amounts. Use the recommended dosage as a starting point and adjust from there until you have hit the "sweet spot" in conjunction with the vodka.

In may take a couple weeks but once you hit the right doses on MB7 and vodka your tank will be cleaner and better off.

Sunny this is what I'm trying to understand, say you had some red, brown coloration of your sand to begin with (not long strands just coloration of the sand) and you decided you had a nutrient problem. So you start dosing vodka, the sand clears up. Then you find out best results are with MB7 also, so you start dosing both. After a bit you start to notice your sand coloring up just like it did before you dosed vodka.

So how do I know what to do now? Its the same colored growth from both before and after...

thanks!

salty geek what are those pictures of?

Looks like the white "felty" bio-film. It is white when it first appears then it will turn to brown eventually if not eaten by snails.

I have had this and in my experience it is caused by over dosing bacteria. The strange part is that it seems to be light sensitive. It does not appear on rocks in the sump(dark)..and only appears on rocks/sand in lighted areas in my tank

Do all of you turn off your skimmers for a few hours when you add the daily dose of MB7?

I started by setting my timer to shut the skimmer off for 2 hours in the evening while mb7 is automatically dosed. I also dose my AA during this period. Honestly, I'm not seeing any noticeable difference.

Thank you, Aquariumclown. Turning a skimmer off for four hours sounded like a long time to me. I might try a shorter time like you by putting my skimmer on a timer.

stratos21ss this brings me back to my original question, f its brownish and coats the sand in light exposed areas, how do you know its not diatoms or cyano??

It is a white fuzzy filamentous growth when it first starts and it turns brown via dom in the water over time. It gets about 1/4" tall. This not the slick dark green film that is also referred to as bio film.

You can see the filaments well in his second pic on the outline of the rock. I don't have a positive id on it either. Black margarita snails clean it off completely.

There are multiple types of growths that seem to appear with carbon dosing. This is only one of them. It would be great to compile a list of the separate kinds and what causes each - to rid the confusion of what everyone is talking about when these issues are discussed.

SunnyX:

Question for you, not like you don't get enough of these!

I have purchased MicroBacter 7 and am reading the instructions but a little confused. I have an established tank but want more color out of my SPS. It says to dose 1 capful per 50gal. no more than once a week then alternately dose 1 drop per 50 gal. daily.

My tank is 120 gal., after I have dosed the initial 2.5 capfuls for my tank do I start dosing daily the 1 drop per 50gal.?

I have also started dosing Vodka,

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hmm.. I have an "established" tank and I have been dosing 3.5 capfuls each day for the last 13 days. Today is the 14th day and I will start dosing .3 ml of Vodka tonight. This is for a 75gal 3 month old tank (which is a re-established system)

This was the advice Sunny gave me if I understood him correctly

Sunny, is MB7 much better than Seachem's Stability? Does it matter what bacteria source I'm dosing or no as long as it is "good" bacteria?

Hello Sunny,
I am on my 5th week of using mb7 and 3rd week of dosing vodka. When I first started I had a lot of nuisance algae including red cotton algae, green hair algae and red slime. I still have a little of the green hair and red cotton but I have a lot of red slime. I was thinking of using red slime algae remover but if you use it your skimmer will overflow for around 3 or 4 days and won't skim properly. Since I am dosing vodka I read earlier that you should have a good skimmer and keep it running. Would you recommend that I add the red slime remover and stop dosing for a week. Or should I just keep dosing, manually try to remove the red slime and hope it will go away soon.
Thanks

Hi,

Just interested in the dosage of MB7. It says;

5 ml (1 capful) of MicroBacter7 per 50 US-gallons (189.3 L) [˜2 drops per gallon (3.8 L)] of aquarium water no more than once each week; alternately, add 1 drop per 50 US-gallons daily

why is the dosage so different for daily and weekly. 2 drops / 1g weekly or 1 drop / 50g daily?

thanks

Aaron

(not to hijack...) BUT Aaron... where have you been????...Ok, carry on with this thread!

Also, confused about the weekly/daily dosing...I am more inclined to do the 1 drop per 50 gallons daily... so, figuring my twv to be about 200 gallons, 4 drops daily, correct??

Give the Vodka more time to lower your PO4/NO3, another month and the nuisance algae should be gone.

Sunny great thread, I read the WHOLE thing, that took some time.

Your tank is super nice, and your attidtude is better. You answer repeat question one after the other. Your answer don't reflect any frustion you just answer the 10th time exactly like you did the first.

Here is my tank situation. I have some Green Cyno that I can't seem to get rid of. I did start to does Vodka dosing, I just started week 2 when i ran across this thread. So I stopped the dosing and ordered some MB7. Here is my plan.

Remove the DSB that is in my sump (display has a SSB), start the MB7 for 2 weeks then start up the Vodka again.

If needed down the road will look into, AA, Lugos, and Stronium.

Thanks again for the great read. Hope it works for me too.

Hello,

The first two weeks you will be dosing the "Medium to heavy" dose. After two weeks you will then switch over to the low nutrient dose IF you do not have any issues with algae or nutrients.

There is no set dosage for system, it all depends on how much nutrients the tank has and what you are trying to achieve.

I dont think that there is much difference between the many bacteria supplements out there. I use MB7 because it is readily available in my area and cheap.

Hello,

I would keep dosing the MB7 but stop dosing the vodka for now. After a week your red slime should start to die-off. Once the slime is gone then you can slowly start back up with the vodka.

If you do decide to use the red slime remover be careful. While it works great at removing he slime, it can brown out corals and cause other issues in your system.
