Hi,

Just interested in the dosage of MB7. It says;

5 ml (1 capful) of MicroBacter7 per 50 US-gallons (189.3 L) [˜2 drops per gallon (3.8 L)] of aquarium water no more than once each week; alternately, add 1 drop per 50 US-gallons daily

why is the dosage so different for daily and weekly. 2 drops / 1g weekly or 1 drop / 50g daily?

thanks

Aaron

Well, the dosages are different because if you are dosing weekly you will have to load up the dosage for one day. Dosing daily is my preferred method as I have seen better results this way.

Sunny great thread, I read the WHOLE thing, that took some time.

Your tank is super nice, and your attidtude is better. You answer repeat question one after the other. Your answer don't reflect any frustion you just answer the 10th time exactly like you did the first.

Here is my tank situation. I have some Green Cyno that I can't seem to get rid of. I did start to does Vodka dosing, I just started week 2 when i ran across this thread. So I stopped the dosing and ordered some MB7. Here is my plan.

Remove the DSB that is in my sump (display has a SSB), start the MB7 for 2 weeks then start up the Vodka again.

If needed down the road will look into, AA, Lugos, and Stronium.

Thanks again for the great read. Hope it works for me too.

Wow, ready the ENTIRE thread is quite a feat! :D Well, we are happy to have you along for the ride.

Your dosing schedule looks good, please keep us informed on your progress.

Sunny , have you had any issues with keeping zoa's and running a ULNS?

My zoo's are growing and doing fine, but I did lose some Rasta zoo's last week. I am not sure why they melted away. :(

Congrats on a beautilul tank.

I've read through this post the last 2 days and have a few questions. My current tank is 3 yrs old and has never had any serious algee problems. Of course its had minor outbreaks of the common stuff but never anything serious. My problem is my sps are browned out. I'm thinking of trying your method on the vodka dosing. I've never been able to get no3 or po4 to register on my tests but I obviously have some hence the minor algee outbreaks.

Since I cant get any reading on my test kits for no3 or po4 I'm thinking of seeding the system with 5ml per 25 gal daily with MB7 for the first week then switching to the low nutrient system and adding 1 drop per 50 gal daily. Also on week 2 starting the vodka dosing at .1 ml per 25 gal first 3 days then doubling it on days 4-7and then adding .5 ml to that and see what happens. I've read the vodka dosing instructions on reef central and they rely on being able to get readings for no3 and po4 and I have tryed 2 different test kits on each and never been able to get any readings. How should I determine my mantinence dose. Any comments greatly appreciated.

Sonny your tank is just amazing!

I've been following your tank progress for the last two months and was just amazed on the results. I started this process about a 1 1/2 months ago and my tank has never looked better. Some of my SPS that have browned and had little growth for months have just started to really color up and grow like crazy. I really am a believer in this dosing regiment. Thanks for the inspiration and documenting your progress.

Hello,

Unless you have a sensitive tester, such as a Hanna Po4 meter, it can be hard to determine the appropriate "maintenance" dosage.

What has worked for me is to closely observe the SPS and inhabitants. Whenever I see my SPS getting light in color I cut my vodka dosage in half, slowly working my way back up.

This dosing method snit really an exact science. Every system will differ, some will need more dosing then others. The main thing to be aware of when dosing with this system is that the dosages will very from week to week and month to month. You will need to closely watch the system and corals for indicators of overdosing/under dosing. After a couple months you will get the hang of the dosing and easily recognize how much to dose.

Good luck!

sunnyx, when dosing do you also look to the skimmer for indication? have you noticed when the corals begin to look pale that the skimmer is pulling less? isn't the dosing suppose to allow the skimmer to pull waste before it breaks down, therefore if dosing and the skimmer stops pulling or pulls alot less waste wouldn't that indicate that it's time to cut back on dosing? just a thought.

Hello and thank you. :D

I am glad that the system is working out well for you. Please keep us updated with your progress and the PRO's/CON's of the system.

My skimmer has always pulled out a consistent amount of skimmate so I have a hard time using it as an indicator. Couple that with the increased feeding and you see why its hard for me to tell if the skimmate it getting low.

If you didn't change your feeding habits then using the skimmer as a gauge would be a great way to do so.

Wow, just noticed that with 162,284 this the most viewed thread in the SPS forum........EVER! :eek1: :eek2:

Pretty cool! :celeb1:

for me there are times when the skimmer just stops pulling completely. I don't know if this is because of a light bio load or if the skimmer is oversized but after a water change, feedings, or if i change something the skimmer will begin to pull again. so i'm begining to experiment with just watching the skimmer action to see if i can predict feeding, light colors of corals and feeding regiment.

Hey Sonny,

I was wondering how many ml of Microbacter 7 you are currently dosing? I saw on your site it said 14 drops per day, but do you know how many ml that is? The reason I'm asking is that I'm considering increasing my MB7 dosage, and was curious how far above the recommended dosage you currently are.

Currently I'm dosing approx 1 ml per day of Microbacter 7, but am considering upping it somewhere between 2ml - 5ml per day. I was getting much darker skimmate during the first 2 "seeding" weeks when dosing the high-nutrient 10 ml per day. Now that I've scaled back to the recommended low-nutrient dosage my skimmate has turned much lighter, and the amount I'm pulling per day has decreased as well.

I'm about to begin the 2nd week of Vodka dosing, and have been increasing my dosages according to the ReefKeeping chart. So far everything has gone well.

Thanks.

Hey Sunny

Thanks for the reply.
Its so nice to have someone like you on rc.

I noticed from your pics you dont have any socks in your sump. I do. Will they be a problem when dosing the MB7. Also I'm going order new bulbs tomorrow. I currently have reeflux 400W 12K MHs. I'm thinking of going to some XM 10Ks or maybe the 15Ks. What do you think.

If you're running 400w.....Radiums all the way. You will have outstanding colors and growth from 400w Radiums.

Thanks tas what K would you recommend.

Radiums are a 20k bulb. Before I made the switch to T5's I was about to switch to Radiums after seeing all of the great tanks on RC that were using them. I made the switch to T5's to help lower electricity costs, which it has done.

Sunny

Heres pics of 2 of my browned sps. I'll use these as my test subjects and post pics of progress as it goes along. I'm really excited about this new (to me anyway) dosing. Thanks for all your hard work and great documenting of this.
