Hi Sonny,

What would you recommend starting dosage of Mb7? I finally smuggled some into Australia. My total water is about the same as yours. Same lights too. I notice your dosing 10 drops a days but bottle says 1 drop per 50g. I started dosing 5 drops daily but noticed a bit more film on my glass.

thanks

Sonny:

Thank you for answering all of my pm's and for your informative thread.

I was looking for your recent tank parameters. Not sure if you posted these or not. What level are your phosphates, nitrates, calcium, and alkalinity at?

I've been running my tank with little to no nitrates at 2.5 ppm(salifert) and .03 phosphates tested with a hanna meter. Calcium is at 440 (API) and Alk at 8.3 (salifert) Ph between 8.0 and 8.2.

Do you see any benefit to vodka dosing for my BB system (Mixed reef-two anemones, three different varieties of caps, some millis, candy cane, frogspawn, torches, mushrooms, and leathers)? I use phosban in BRS reactor and religiously change that out every month. I'm running carbon a few days a month right after a water change.

Recently I've noticed a cyano and diatom outbreak (could be bulbs but I don't know) and have started dosing MB7 at the startup dosage 5ml per 25 gallons to hopefully out compete the cyano.

Hello,

did some tests recently:
phosphates: 0.01
nitrates: 0
calcium: 440
alkalinity: 7.4 DKH

Have you ever thought about adding sand? :p It would give the bacteria much more surface area to work with. If you levels all look good then you may not need vodka. I would dose the MB7 for now and see what happens.

sunny,

Whats your thoughts on U.V.?I run one, but don't really know if it does anything,I currently shut it down to see if it has any affect one way or the other.Im pretty sure i read you don't run one,but is there a reason you don't?
Thanks sunny

Hello,

Running UV in my reef would be counterproductive as it would destroy some of the beneficial bacteria I am adding. Some people run them and swear by them, but I have never run one and have just fine. ;) Personally, I wouldn't run one. It may kill bad bacteria and algae spore but who knows what else it is destroying. Its not worth the cost or maintenance.

Sonny, Im running carbon. In our systems how do you advise the use of carbon (mesh bags sitting in sump)

I like to run mine in a mesh bag and place it in the sump. I have run it in a fluidized reactor before but found that it absorbed compounds too quickly, and the the carbon eventually broke down if the flow wasn't adjusted correctly.

So advised that carbon should be run 24/7 or another schedule? How often should it be changed out? How much carbon do you use at a single time? I am currently using 2x 3"x7" bags full of Activated Carbon by Pet-Co. Also what are the differences between expensive carbons and cheap non-phosphate leaching carbons that are cheaper? Any brand known to be the best carbon? I was told by my LFS that Chemi-Pure has ingredients that are harmful so I changed to something different.

sonny,

Thanks for answering, but I've got one more question, what skimmer would you recommend,I've got a terminator 2 right now but it doesn't seem to be doing the job.My total water volume is about 320 gl.I've read reviews on a lot of different models but like to know what your experince has been,Thanks again sonny..

Hatemeyet

I'll let Sonny chime in here but I am partial to an ATB skimmer due to ease of use quality construction energy efficiency skimmate production resale value and most importantly customer service

Of course it depends on what your budget is but there are many quality brands out there to choose from

I think Sonny runs a Deltec rated for at least 2x his water system volume

Sunny, You seem to be the authority in carbon dosing and the MB7. I know I already asked you this but I am quite concerned about my corals fading. Do you think its diffidently a light issue or lack of nutrients. I have plenty of HA and other algae that leads me to believe that the nutrients aren't too low but I also do not feed a lot either. I am shutting my lights down an hour early as you said but I'm wondering if I should feed some AA's more.

Any thoughts on fading corals from your experience?

THX
