Hey Sunny ...

Have you ever tried stopping vodka dosing and only continue with the daily addition of MB7? If so, did your nutrient levels go up?

I am just trying to determine that if MB7 alone does the job if i should still dose vodka? I don't mind stripping it ALL out which will allow me to feed heavy and dose AA. I just wonder that if without vodka, i could achieve that super clean system.

Thanks!

Sometimes if my water gets too clean I cut back on the vodka for one week and then restart it back up. Every system is different so I am not sure if the MB7 is enough on its own.

Hi Sunny,
I have been following your tanks for few months now and I have been lurking on this thread for a couple weeks, trying to read up before posting. My question is for the MicroBacter7. I know its the all around cure for everything so says the description, but in actually what have you noticed it doing? Is this MB7 by brightwell? I want to start dosing do to a decent bioload and I seem to have alot of algae and very dirty rocks, I just added 24 astrea snails and they have cleaned things up a little, but Its too early to tell if they have solved my problem. I have a little algae that is a flaky dark brown algae that just started popping up and some briopsis algae. I have been trying to feed less and feed more pellet based foods, but I dont see a difference. I am running a DAS EX-1 skimmer and everything else is pretty much in check for my 75gallon. What did the MB7 do for you and how would it help me? Is it the Brightwell Aquatics MB7? Thanks btw... suscribed :)

I also forgot to add that I have some bubble algae popping up all over the place do to introducing some frags a few months ago that had some on it. DOH@! I battle with briopsis, bubble algae and regular green glass algae, red turf like algae on the rocks too.. I am making my system out to be dirty, but you know that most of us reefers are perfectionists anyways! Looking forward to reading more!

Hello Chris :D

I dont believe that Brightwell's MB7 is a cure-all but it will help clean your tank by out competing the algae for nutrients.
MB7 along with vodka is a potent algae killing solution.

The reason I started using it was to out compete red Cyano and other forms of bad bacteria that can pop up when dosing a carbon source. I did notice clear water and increased skimmate after dosing MB7.

If you are dealing with nutrient issues then it cant hurt to try MB7 and maybe even vodka.

Sonny,
Was wondering if you are using the dosage amount (MB7) from the bottle, or are you dosing a higher amount.

I would start the bacteria portion ASAP. This way your cycle will be reduced and you may offset large blooms of early algae.

The carbon source(Biotem) should be added anywhere between 3-4 weeks AFTER the initial start of bacterial dosing.

Reef Booster should be used after corals are added about 4-6 months down the road.
I second that.
I dose BioDigest rightaway on the start of the tank and faces no issues down the road. For your info, I dump 1 amp to my 1ft cube and my 1.5ft cube each. All turn out great! So it's kind of like a foolproof method to me now haha :X
but,
I am switching to MB7 but nevertheless still keeping this method on hand (:

Happy Reefing,
Marc

Hello :D

I wouldn't worry too much about mixing bacterial supplements. Eventually the MB7 will out compete the Prodibio strain if you continue making regular additions of MB7.

I am not sure what proof Absolut Vodka is but follow the dosing according to the proof in the Reefkeeping article. Why not use a cheap generic vodka instead?

I understood that the whole reason one dosed vodka was to reduce nutrient levels down to 0 so I am not sure where you read that. As long as you dose bacteria for the first month you should be fine to start up with vodka afterward. Just start out slow and watch your levels as you wont have much waste in the tank to process.
Roger bro.
I shall comb my local stores for a generic cheap vodka. haha (:
and
tmr shall be the start of my tank officially! :D

Happy Reefing,
Marc

I am up to about 12 drops a day now. This seems to be the sweet spot for my system. Follow the instructions on the bottle and increase or decrease dosages based on your observations.

Sunny,How much vodka do you dose daily?

I am currently dosing 2ml of 80 proof Vodka a day.

Sonny,
Looking great! You should see if they can have a sticky thread for the MB7/vodka dosing. Your thread is getting bogged down with all of these Q's!

Post some pictures of the new tank!

Sonny,
How far under the water are your 2 Vortechs?? My tank is 20" also and I finally received my replacement Vortech from Ecotech today and I'm playing around with placement.

Im curious with such little feedings have you ever checked your po4 or no3 levels. Im wondering what they are since not feeding everyday or as much. I wonder if i feed to much, crazy.

I have them down about 4", on opposite sides Parallel to each other. So far my corals and system has been loving the unique flow.

Sonny, Where you dosing 1.8ml of vodka?

I recently upped it to 2ML and it seems like the best dosage for me right now. I am using 80 proof Vodka.

Oh, and I will have pics for you guys no later then this weekend, most likely tomorrow. ;)

I have not checked my P04 and No3 in a long time but will see if I can tomorrow. I have no algae and my corals are looking and doing well so the Po4 is in an acceptable range.

My corals and sand are usually good indicators of over feeding. If my sand gets some brown or my corals start to darken up then I know I am feeding too much and need to cut back.

What is your current feeding schedule?
