Soulpatch's build thread (ongoing)

Hmmm. I'm still holding out hope for CM, but yeah, that'll suck if there's nothing. Thank goodness ecotech has a stellar reputation and great customer service... because having MAP pricing and never going on sale suuucks for a customer who works on a bottom dollar...

Ordered my wav last night. Totally done spending for a bit after these few days...

New tank painting is done so time to resemble and start dry fitting plumbing this weekend...

Are you going to have a separate "dry" section for all the electronics? Separate from your sump section under the cabinet. I have read horror stories from the humidity caused by the open sump ruining electronics.

Looking good so far.

I am planning to get a small server rack and have the electronics suspended in the stand. On the other side from the sump though.

Fans I will put into the stand should aid with humidity

Your set up is way over my head. lol But just wanted to say love reading your plans. Can't wait to see it.

I have plenty of years in freshwater planted tanks which I had various levels of complexity. This big new tank though I am getting most of the ideas on here from others. Tons of reading on here and research to ensure I can get it setup right the first time.

Though also a lot of learning from the nano tank and after dealing with some things there it keeps me focused to take my time with this tank...

Really the only thing that carries of from FW to SW, the nitrogen cycle. Other then that, everything is totally different.

I have been keeping freshwater tanks for over 30 years. Did not prepare me at all for my saltwater.

I think if you keep complex planted tanks you are a lot closer to salt then you think. I was dosing trace elements, had a CO2 system going with bubble counters and had to change and test water to make sure I buff it the right way as well as it had enough chems. More maintenance in the way of trimming plants and keeping the scene looking as it should. I did canisters and a sump so had to clean them more frequently as well as deal with some of the mods I made.

And with a planted tank you have to be extra leary of algae as it eats same as your plants that you want. Trim back too far and you can lose everything.

Salt has more machinery to keep track of but a lot of it is set and forget. I really think there are a lot of similarities between a complex FW and a SW tank. Lots of testing, trace elements, and machinery to run both...

I started low tech but when you want a show tank with the plants creating scenes you need to go higher tech. I was trying my hands in the Japanese styles of aquascaping to create underwater scenes. With each type of plant having different needs with suppliments meant direct dosing into the substrate, water dosing, and more.

Honestly it was WAY more of a pain then it was ever worth. Dont get the same enjoyment from the plants as corals which is main reason I switched. Though I do wish I had kept my CO2 tank and bubble counter as I could have used that with a calcium reactor...

Electrician coming over this weekend to quote new electrical panel, dedicated fish tank lines, and generator transfer switch. Getting poorer by the day

Things are moving along nicely. Gotta have that generator with a big tank. $X,XXX amount of corals, it's worth tossing a few hundred at a generator and transfer.

I guess I'm glad I'm stuck in nanoland for now. Just stuffing my mattress in hopes of moving out to the burbs one day.

I already have a big generator. And a small one. I just want the ability to heat my home in winter when I lose power and not have power cords running through the house...

We are going to be doing a new kitchen in the spring as well so upgrading the electrical now will be beneficial as well as for our eventual sale of the house.

I will tell you one thing daycare is expensive. If I didn't have to spend $1,300 monthly for it or even only half of it I could have been out of my house already, had a large tank, or at a minimum had this tank operational and be debt free. If you all don't have kids.....don't. Feel like you want one spend a few months going out back and burning a barrel of cash to get a feel for it...

When I bought my genny, wish it had an auto on feature. As it is right now, I go out start it, trip 2 breakers and were good to go. Friends have an Auto on one, except for a small hiccup in the power(literally like 30 seconds), it kicks on by itself.

Lol @ the kids comment. I decided long ago I didn't want kids and had the snip snip done. If I had kids right now, pretty sure I wouldn't have a tank.

Being in a townhome there is not enough space for auto on. That said when weather is coming I typically have it set up and I have a controller for it that I can stand inside and switch the on button to power it up. Great feature for the wife so she can start it when i am not at home.

Next house will have a larger whole house genny though. After having one now I can't se going back to life without power. We lost it for about a week last year and I was sitting inside warm and watching tv while surfing the internet. My neighbors were inside eating tuna fish and playing board games by candles I assume. Though I was the neighborhood phone charge station. HA HA. I had a plug outside that people could plug into for charging of their devices.

Yeah my wife keeps telling me that in NYC it's more than double your number for basic daycare for kidlings. ouch.

As for power generation, fortunately I'm on the ground floor with a balcony, so I could always do the generator thing, but I'm smack between two big coal power plants that power NYC, so we're the last ones to lose power. Even in Sandy my friend lived a block away from where I live now, and said he never lost power. I've got the ecotech backup battery too for short periods of backup. I run it down quarterly or so, and it lasts about 3 days, which is pretty impressive. I know the 3-5 day is where things get really testy, but hopefully it never comes to that because of where I am.

NYC is about the same for daycare as I pay I would imagine. My area of PA is apparently one of the highest in the country.
