Soulpatch's build thread (ongoing)

I've always liked the frag tank in the stand, particularly if you have the room to do it right. One thing I would recommend though (and not sure where you're going to ultimately stand on a refugium) is to block the light from going across the whole bottom of the stand, if you do put light in for a frag tank or separate refugium (I think you have one built in already but are on the fence about using it).

I had pocillapora and coralline algae growing on all of the stuff in my stand because of the refugium light, including in my skimmer body and in any clear plumbing.

What are your thoughts on this post, about how strong the Gyre is. I was definitely under a different impression. And for reference, he's using the 130 on a 62g cube...

I have a refugium built into my trigger elite sump. Simply going to use it for chateo with some marine pure spheres in it to grow pods as well as the chateo. That will be my only export algae at this time. I might switch things with a display refugium later should I desire but not now. I need the remainder of the tank up first.

The sump has red acrylic as well to help stop light bleed. Its not perfect of course but it should help some. If it becomes an issue I can get some black acrylic to guard more.

As for the gyre it is strong. I have it perhaps at 50% in my tank but it goes along the top of my water as it ****ed off corals when I had it lower int eh tank. I was thinking of just doing 2 gyres in the 93 cube I was originally going to get.

Yea I just wasn't sure on the plan of using the refugium for that purpose or not. Maybe we just discussed using sand or not.

I'm almost regretting not picking one up when they were on sale on Black Friday just to play with it...

I should probably just repair my old vortech and use that.

Corals can take a lot of flow before it is a problem. I've only ripped the flesh off of one coral with my MP10 so far! :) / :(

Well if I take down the cube with the build of the 150 then I will probably offload the gyre so you can have first dips on it. I got the WAV system for the new tank and dont know where I would incorporate the gyre anyway even if I wanted to move it.

Pump fixed. Had a clog on the air intake that was impacting the overall intake. Everything stripped and cleaned.

Tomorrow is water change and need to put the reactor back online as I have some issue algae popping up.

Mine does this as well, have to scrape what looks like salt creep out of it about once every 2 months.

I have a feeling I clogged it myself in my last cleaning as I did not take it apart as I normally do. That said normally at least weekly I run fresh RODI through the tube to stop any buildup.

swapped a piece of my ricordea last night for a new acan. Blue acan with yellow mouths. Still not fully open in the tank so will grab pics later.

Got the quote for the electrical work I want done as well and came in less then I was expecting. So now need to come up with the 750 for that.

The biggest thing for me though is that I finally got the police report from earlier this month where a young girl decided to run across 4 lanes of traffic at night and in front of my truck. Thankfully she was fine though I did not know that until I got the report on Monday. The past 3 weeks have been a drain on me not knowing the extent of her injuries. I figured she was ok since the impact was so slow (10-15MPH) but one never knows. While I was not at fault for the accident I have been pretty occupied with thoughts on her condition so it was a relief to get the report that she is fine. Unfortunetly though I have to pay my deductible for the repairs on my truck till insurance can go after her parents I guess so that has hampered my build slightly as that is 500 I need to pull from tank build for this. Couple that with the fact that my truck has been down since the start of the month and is not likely to be running again until second week of Janruary. The impact caused what appeared to be minor cosmetic damage only but turns out she cracked my intercooler which also caused a trasmission failure. Transmission is coming but wont be in till NYE and once in they will know if that is it or if I also fried my turbos with the intercooler being down.

All said and done it looks like Soulpatch will be shopping for a new truck even if this one gets fixed come the new year. But regardless thankfully the girl is fine and hopefully she learned not to play in traffic...

Always nice to get some fun new pieces.

At least she wasn't hurt, so it makes it easier for you on a lot of fronts, but sorry to hear about your spat of bad luck. How did a young girl crack an intercooler though? (j/k; I guess she drove her car across the 4 lanes, it originally sounded like she ran across the lanes)

New truck is good, though expensive. Clearly you should have bought the (insert other brand of truck that you don't have here) instead!

But hey, lots of time at home with the family on the holidays if your wheels have been offline!

No Reef she ran across the lanes. My intercooler is right behind he grill and she damaged it enough to it being replaced.

Current truck is being paid for now so new truck payment would be around the same. I lease as I am in and out too often to worry about paying somehting off.

Ouch. Sounds like she was "Built Ford Tough" and your truck wasn't :p

You do the math for a living, so you know what is right for you, but I've always bought (or financed) with the intent of keeping it forever. Unfortunately NYC disagreed with that logic, so no more cars until I leave. I wouldn't want to keep a car here anyway. Seeing new Teslas, MBs, and 7 series BMWs with their sides and bumpers scratched and chipped to death makes me sick to my stomach walking to work in the morning. I could never treat a car like that.

Yeah for me I am bored with a car/truck after a few years. I kept my first two cars but I put enough into them in upgrades (turbos and such) to have bought new cars... I need to tow for my race bikes and normally every 2-3 years tech in trucks come about making it more powerful, comfortable, better on gas. The reduced amount I spend in leasing vs buying allows me to get into a better vehicle for my needs. Though should something come about that that speaks to me I will buy it. The new Ford RS for instance is pulling my strings.

Spending over 1K a month in car payments is a pain... lol Though it is a pain I chose to live with for all my bells and whistles. LOL

Haha how ironic, my boss keeps saying that Ford Focus RS should be my next car when it's released. He's keeps saying it's turbo and 4wd and turbo. It's really nice looking but I want to see first if Honda actually releases the Civic Type R here, then it's going to be a hard decision!

Its not coming to the US next year for one. It is not coming till the 2018 model which means sometime in 2017. And couple that with the fact that it is less power only putting out 300 ponies when others are putting out more already and it continues Hondas last place rankings in the small tuner world that has been going on for some time.

The only other cars that would get my attention is the supposed remodel of the STI, a new Golf R, or a few other small cars. And if I chose to stay leasing then I might go for a M3 for a couple years to get my speed bug back.

I saw a focus RS in Watkins Glen at their tiny Ford dealership a few months ago while I was on vacation, so I think they're here.... It was a really nice car. I had to check it out up close.

I like the car a lot, but isn't it FWD only? I don't like >200hp on FWD. If it is AWD, that'd be pretty spiffy. I'm not a fan of the civic type R.

I've been looking at the Chevy Super Sport if I was going to do new in a reasonable price range. Or an M5 or S550 if I go used. Or a truck if we move somewhere snowy. But in the mean time, this petrolhead has to settle for driving in Forza in the meantime :(

The RS is not yet for sale and wont be till next summer or so. They do have a few test models in the US for testers and such to try out. It is a 350 ish HP AWD supercar in a small hatch body. It will currently stomp most other cars out there in and above its class. I mean it has launch control and a drift model. It also supposedly has the most advanced AWD system created to date so we shall see.

Who knows what I get next for my car. I know I will swap my Explorer for another large SUV or pickup as I need to tow for my race bikes. My wife can take over the towing car as she likes bigger vehicles and I can get whatever I want next summer...

dang you hit a person hard enough to break the intercooler? HOW BIG WAS SHE?!

if i wasent so deep into my s4 i'd trade it in when the time comes on a focus RS, they're gonna be some super awesome cars for the price compared to the other competition ( golf R and STI)

I am not sure she broke the intercooler directly but might have corked a line in or out and with me driving it home fried it. I just know it had to be replaced as is my transmission.

Yeah 36K or so for a small supercar is not bad at all. Blows doors off a STI for same price. Though I need to see some more specs on it and try driving it before I am convinced. I also have the issue that the wife cannot drive stick so I would have to teach her for the days I would need the truck to tow to race track. I do want my manual back though. Auto leaves a lot to be desired for me and I figure if I was able to teach her how to drive a motorcycle then I can teach her how to drive a manual car...

True but 300 ponies all motor is always nice. I've always loved the R badge, yes Honda always screws us in the US but I've been a Honda guy forever. It would be one of those cars you buy and drive but not tweak because of its prestige (at least in my head). Not to say I don't appreciate the other brands, don't get me wrong if the wife said go ahead and buy Godzilla I'm heading straight to the dealership 20 minutes from the house because we have a certified Skyline dealership here. They have the specialized rack and techs for it hehe. The owner of that dealership took the first one shipped there off the transport and drove it straight home.
