Soundproofing Aquarium Cabinet

I have read through a few similar threads, but I would like to hear from someone who has tried to soundproof their stand. I am looking into different soundproofing materials such as foam eggcrate with anti mold characteristics. My concern is if the stand is completely closed in im sure humidity and heat will be an issue. I am thinking of leaving two holes in the soundproofing material, one with a fan and one without. btw I have an open back cabinet.

The best way to do this is to isolate what is making the sound.

If it's the pump, then a quieter pump. Place it on a mouse pad to soften vibration, and put a length of flexible vinyl hose between the pump and the sump and between the pump and the return line. Then the vibration of the pump is isolated.

Second, if there is a splashing noise into the sump, try a Herbie overflow style or beananimal overflow style.

Minimize the distance water must fall by shortening bulkheads in the sump. The only bulkhead you really need is to keep the skimmer area a constant water height, others can vary.

Fans can be replaced with quieter fans such as computer fans.

Ballasts should be located in places less humid.

That should about do it. In my experience the two most noisy parts of the sump are the drain line comming in from the tank, and the pump vibrating against the sump wall or the return piping. If you quiet them down, then you shouldn't need to insulate the cabinet.

Incidentally, auto stereo shops carry sound dampening insulating foam for use in speaker boxes and car doors and trunks. You may check those places out if you must insulate the cabinet.

Armaflex insulation. It is used outside and it's most commonly used to insulate one of your household air conditioning lines. You can buy in sheets or to insulate pipes. In the HVAC industry we use the sheets to insulate duct on roofs. It is also used in damp enviroments as an interior sound insulation in aeas such as gymnasiums

thanks for the replies. I have dampened the vibrations in the sump from the pumps with some rubber that came with the pumps (2 - mag drive 12's) i also run an external scrubber, so i have that drain noise to go along with the overflow drain. If i decrease the flow it helps, but i dont want to sacrifice flow. I will try to experiment with a few options listed here including insulating the cabinet. maybe ill post some pics afterwards if anyone is interested in the results.

Tagging along on this- champ- where can you get the armaflex? I would love to use this stuff on my tank cabinet. As its in my Livingroom and. Very close to my bedroom. Any pics of it in use? Thanks

Accousti-blok. Like a thick rubber. I used it on my cabinet and canopy. Can't remember the exact spec but reduces sound by 10-20 dB. Google and it should come up.

Am working on a bigger tank that is in my living room and MUST have quiet reef to have household harmony. So glad someone else has already posted about this.

What about the black styrofoam pipe insulator? It has a seam in it so you can wrap it around your pipe and am pretty sure it is waterproof. What are thoughts of cutting that to length and lining them up vertically against each other all the way around the inside of the stand?

We are building a stand for ours and will definately put a back on it. Not sure why there are stands without a back. A simple hole in the back will get your power strip cord through to plug it in.
