Sounds Module

We're having some amazing thunder storms in my area here for the last 36 hours or so (and forecast to continue another 16 hours or so). Last night my aquarium was in "Lightning" mode and it just happened to be thundering outside... I mean window rattling type of thunder.... it made me realize just how cool the sound module really would be. I wanted it before but now I really want it for my system :)

This sounds like a great idea. I would love to be able to play an ocean sound, or randomize playlist from a selected set of tracks depending on time of day, weather, etc... Thinking about it I think it could be ran directly via Profilux software and have the music come directly from your PC. That way you could have the PC sound card connect to any speakers/stereo you want. It really shouldn't be that hard to add. I could write something but I have no idea how to connect to/communicate with the profilux software.

One thing I don't like about Profilux is they insist on their own support forum instead of allowing help posts on RC...
With that said, you may want to post on their forum to get more support from their developers.

Hi,

This is not the case, we allow users to support users on Reef central, however as well documented the reason we do not offer OFFICIAL support here is because there is no way of catagorising support, so when a user wants to find a topic that may or may not exist they have to either repost a repeated answered question or spend ages trying to find if the answer already exists.

A long time ago everybody complained about this, so GHL launched the official support site, then everyone complained about that so we spent a lot on a dedicated North American support site, now that it seems does not make everyone happy either.

It seems we can not please everyone, so we allow users to support users on RC for those that wish it but official support will always be offered where it can be properly catagorised and importantly moderated to avoid repeat posts and questions.

www.profiluxsupport.com offers way more for such a product and is just one click away and easy to locate a support topic that may help you. Rc can not or ever will offer such a service and thats why we do not offer first line support here.

Sorry, didn't mean to ruffle any feathers...
I haven't been to the north america site yet, the old site was very frustrating to say the least.
The new sight looks much improved.

Please join the site there is a massive amount of resources already there for example the ever growing how to library of video tutorials.

Once you sign up we will accept your username next time we are online, typical wait time to become registered is 1-4 hours.

Reading this thread made me laugh a little. Are you sure you guys are in the aquarium hobby? When did storm simulation become part of reef aquaria?

a very long time ago, for some corals start to spawn and feed, same effect is seen on a full moon also with corals, with the correct effect you can visibly see corals more so at night react with agression and strong feeding tenticle extension.

Interesting, but, definitely not very long ago. The ability to do this was not really available until 1-10v controller and LED technology was sufficiently developed. I have been in the hobby a long time and back in the day we weren't doing this with a light switch and our T-12 bulbs. lol. I guess I am curios as to whether or not there is any documented beneficial effect on growth or coloration, because that has always been my goal since going mostly SPS. Spawning would just make my skimmer go crazy. I will be switching over to LED's in the near future so maybe I will jump on board then. Anyway, I will do some reading, because there seems to be a lot on here and some of the lighting manufacturers forums that are obsessed with it.

GHL has had 1-10v interfacing since 1999 on the first profilux release called the profilux II still made today, this was developed along with their T5 dimmable fixtures using Osram ballasts, at the same time as this they developed the Simu and Simu-L sticks to provide storm effects

so the technology through GHL has been about for nearly 13 years now.

That being said I have failed to find anyone get corals to spawn under such conditions, feeding frenzy for sure can be proved, along with an increase in fish activity. It remains a cool feature and the benefits will always remain scheptical, however it does make a good party piece ;)

Ya but your from the UK and Europe is alway way ahead of us. Lol. The first PII in North America was only 6 years ago by Superfudge in British Columbia. anyway, I am hijacking so I will go and do some reading.

Ah yes good old blighty! I am back there in a few weeks, rolling hills a good British pint, cosy villages and of course mass immigration of the not prepared to work kind......now why did I leave? Hmmmmm?

Ok now I am hijacking also ;)

Honestly the "Lightning" aspect is the first reason I began even considering a ProfiLux unit. I read about it on another forum and starting asking questions... next thing you know I'm trying to buy a ProfiLux.

I know some people have claimed that lightning causes stress or panic in our fish but my tanks proves exactly the opposite. When a storm starts they all seem to calm down and go to their "Happy" place... some go into their night time mode and some actually act like they are waiting for food to fall from the heavens.

Regardless yes it's an AWESOME party trick which will only be emphasized by adding some thunder sounds to the system.

Ultimately I'd like to incorporate a gentle rain, a down pour, and maybe some strong winds howling into the mix :)

Just to clarify what I'm looking for in a sound module. I've gotten several PM's telling me, "This has already been done. There is some GHL guy who did this a couple of years ago and he's even posted videos about it on youTube."

For the record that's Gareth and he did an amazing job! He gets full credit for the work he did in this from the beginning and is still a wealth of information for GHL related tech.

I'm looking for a "module" that contains the Mp3 player, speaker, audio out jack and that interacts with the ProfiLux directly. Here is a list of "Allens wants":

  • A) MP3 device with a small onboard speaker but also "Speaker Out" jack to connect to external audio device if desired (imagine the thunder claps coming from your home audio Surround Sound system the next time you have guests over)
  • B) Plug into a "Port" on the ProfiLux ("L" or "S" port whichever is better for this task)
  • C) Be able to connect to a laptop/PC via USB to add/remove Sound Tracks
  • D) Reacts with "lightning strikes" and able to play a single track or random tracks from the onboard playlist.
  • E) Unit is small in form factor maybe the size of 3" x 6" or so

If I had the ability to make something like this I can 100% assure you I would have already done it but alas I don't. I wouldn't know where to even start let alone know what to do once I got started LOL!

Kudos to the guys who have accomplished this via iPods/MP3 with a speaker connected to a "socket" on the power bar. That's awesome but what I'm seeking to find, make, or pay to get made is a unit that comes close to meeting the above criteria.

If someone has an idea of who I can contact to help make such a device please let me know. I'm willing to make the initial contact and see what it takes to get the ball rolling.

+1

Its funny, I built my first "storm rig" on a freshwater tank about 5 years ago. I have been tweaking the audio and visual aspect of this ever since. Kinda nice that people are still using it as a reference :-) Thanks guys :-)

My new storm rig I am putting together is considerably more complicated and involves Rain, several DIY LED arrays spanning 2 aquariums, an audio component and 5 x Simu Spots.

I'm thinking I might try to build a PCB with a relay on it that might be able to be triggered from an S port (or a 110v source like an outlet on a GHL power bar, or Power HUB) that would simply interrupt the audio feed to a speaker. The goal is to make a PCB with a small amplifier built in that can have the audio output switched instantly (no more discharge delay on AC adaptors). If I can find a suitable embedded mp3 player I might try to integrate it all onto one PCB.

Please do not message me for one of these yet, it is going to take me a few months to even get one designed, let alone fabricate one, its something I am tinkering with in my very limited free time.

I wont PM you (yet) but please keep us posted. If there is anything we can do to help please don't hesitate to enlist us.
