SouthDown incognito....

Found some white play sand at HD today. Oldcastle is the distributor, believe it's called Kolorscape. Passes the vinegar test, almost completely dissolved. Also says not for aquarium use. Another good sign. $3.99 a bag. This info should be useful to someone.

Found at HD 95th and Pulaski.

if you could pleas tell us the sku# on the bag. much appreciated:D i would like to check out home depot in indiana and see if they also carry it. the last time i bought some from home depot my local store did'nt have any in stock so i gave them the sku# and they looked it up on there computer and told me the closest store that did have it on hand.

Chris and others....I did a google search for this sand and I'm not sure if it's what you're talking about or not.

Says on bag do not use for aquarium

At any rate, Old Castle may be selling more than one type of sand under that name. There are some that say it doesn't fizzle and some say it does. I've got a bag from here in Joliet, and it doesn't....not even close to southdown I tested them side by side.....I bought it for a sand box anyhow, but I thoughtI'd give it a test.

Chris...does your bag have a little box with a silica warning in it? just curious to see if it's a standard warning on the bag.

I'll do ya 1 better, here's some photos.

They are clear enough to read the SKU#, but here it is anyway.

Yea, it has the warning that it may contain some silicates.

Seems odd that some would disolve, and some won't. Mine went almost completely away. Hmmmmmmmmm....

About the whole Do Not Use For Aquarium...... They started that years ago, now all Old Castle sand has this on the lable. That is, the stuff that's not marketed tward us.

Chris,
same bag, same sku....but mine from the Joliet store is not aragonite. Like I said, I did a side by side vinegar test with some southdown I had inthe garage. I guess we'll all have to bring an eye dropper and vinegar to home depot.....

Jeff

I found this thread that seems to imply the same thing about this product....old castle
people on that board are getting mixed results as well.....

Jeff

Weird.

Well anyway, aragonite or silica don't really matter, as long as it looks good. Since we all know buffering is a myth, the only difference would be the shape of the grain.

Still sucks if it's inconsistant though.

Chris and Jeff,

To do the "vinegar" test does the sand just have to fizzle or do I have to put small amount in a glass and all have to dissolve?

BTW ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ Bââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢brook HD has pallet loads and says they will be carrying it stock for the spring and summer.

Thanks
Jim Mc

Yes.....:D

either one....if you put a drop of vinegar on a little pile of sand it will fizzle. if you put a small amount of aragonite sand in some vinegar it will completely dissolve. The stuff I got in Joliet just sits there.

Comparing the sand that I just bought to real southdown and another white silica sand, it is obvious that this is not aragonite. Once left out of the bag and allowed to dry out for a little while, it demonstrates the same properties as the silica sand....whereas the aragonite ismore "crumbly" for lack of a better word.

If you bought some, let us know if it is or isn't.....I'd like to have a few bags around the house for my softie tank.

UPDATE:

Went back this morning and bought 8 bags to test.

NONE OF THEM DISSOLVE IN VINEGAR.

I had a small amount from HD that did dissolve yesterday, but now that I have purchased several bags I'm not really sure what the deal is. I suppose the moral is test before you buy. Sorry if I caused confusion in here, but this would still be a decent sand.
