SouthDown Natural Play Sand

I'm not sure if the pallet is in yet, but I have 2 bags (100 lbs) you can have for $5.00 apiece. They're just sitting in my garage. The bags got slightly cut open on the pallet, but I taped them up pretty good. I lost the number to the Melbourne HD unfortunately. PM me if you're interested.

Does anyone know if the sand is in? I came up on this thread a little late. I called to find out if there are any left but Carla said they were out. She also informed me that she was ordering another pallet of the sand and it was going to be here in two weeks, but will cost $10 a bag. This was 3 weeks ago. She took my name and number down and told me she was going to call everyone on the list once the pallet had arrived. Just wondering if anyone knew any info.

Wonder why it went up to 10 dollars a bag. That seems kind of high for playsand.

Bigchris, where are you at in orlando? I might head down there and pick it up from you next weekend.

I guess the high demand helped with the price hike. Still...$10 for a 50lb bag is still good. But if I dont get a call within this week I might just have to go with regular silica sand.

I think that type sand will kill everything you put in your tank. I'm no expert, but if it has silica, I would bet it will kill everything. So you might want to hold off on that purchase.......

Lots of people use silica sand with no problems from what I've read. Some people suspect it can lead to higher silica in the water and help diatom outbreaks or something, but then others say that silica will not dissolve into the tank water. I think silica would work fine except for the lack of buffering that you get from aragonite.

I didn't like the way silica sand looked in my tank. It wasn't as white as aragonite, plus it caused a giant red slime algae outbreak a week after I added it. If you think $10 is too much for a 50 lb bag, then go to the LFS and pay $40!!! Honestly, I think anything under $20 is a steal.

You can find white silica sand though. Mine is pure white but I have alot of flow in my tank so I'm going for a thicker sand like Southdown. Other then that, I love it and it's cheap.
