Southdown Tropical Play Sand from Home Depot?

Does anyone know where to get this Southdown Tropical Play Sand in the area? Someone said that Home Depots on the east coast sell it... not sure if they would transfer it here...

I have done some reading on Southdown brand sand and it seems that the company was bought out or went out of business. You may find some old stock left at some hardware stores around.
The good news is that supposably there is calcium based sand available under the names of Kolorscape and Oldcastle so look for those.
Do the vinegar test to see if other sand you find is calcium based or not.

I guess OldCastle is the new Southdown.

I guess OldCastle packages the sand under a variety of different names for different places, one of them being YardRight Tropical Play Sand. They also have different names depending on who is selling it, I heard that Kolorscape is another name.

The way to tell is to look at the packaging and it will say, in very small print I am told, made by OldCastle.

Does anyone know where to get any of these in the area?

Why did you not like it?

There are several types of play sand, only a few are the correct ones by southdown or oldcastle - not sure which you got.

When did you get it?

Please be aware that not all of Old Castle's sand is the correct type of sand. You need to do the fizz test on it.

One cup in the 300 g was ok, a half pail was ok. 1 bag was ok, but the 5 bags sucked. It was extreamly fine and the tank was always murky. It killed the bacteria on the bottom of the tank before I could remove it, and I fought with the tank for 6 months trying to get rid of the algae bloom that ensued. I had only 1 fish. a large puffer. He had no interest in stirring up the bottom.

Now I have Carrib Sea - Seafloor special grade. I love it, it's like fine gravel.

I've tried lots of sand - proly 10 different types.

I got the right stuff, cuz I compared the picture I found online at the time. I got it not to long ago.

The tanks in dry dock now, I have to buff the scratches out of the acrylic.


I work with the sand and mining companies with the brickyard, So I had samples of different sand sent from all over the US at 1 point. I had a whole shelf of zip lock bagies... different people swear by different things. Just make yourself happy.

I always use regular old silica sand. Always have, always will, unless I happen across something cheap like Southdown (or similar). Perfect grain size, doesn't compact at all and it's cheap.

What is the vinegar test?

If you pour some vinegar on the sand, it should fizz - there should be a chemical reaction even if ever so slight.

If it does not fizz, then it's not the right sand.
