Species Identification (help)

SYS7EMATIC

New member
So I posted this about a year ago with the same question and never really got a definitive answer. I figured I'd resubmit it to see if anyone might be able to shed some light onto what this little guy is.

I bought this clown from a lfs about three years ago. It was purchased from a tank full of false perculas for $15. He stuck out like a sore thumb, however. All the rest of his tankmates were the archetypal orange and white clownfish that you expect to see. He was the only fish in the tank to have this kind of...intermediate coloration.

Anyways, at this point he is full grown; about three inches in length. It is safe to say that this is his adult coloration and that the orange is here to stay. We thought, for the longest time, that he was a b&w fp and that the orange would eventually give way to black. Obviously, that hasn't been the case.

Anyways, is this just some sort of strange color variation? Perhaps a hybrid? or could it be a different species all together? In either case, I personally have never seen a clownfish quite like this one. Have any of you?

p.s. the first picture is from a year and a half ago. You can see from the following pics (taken yesterday) that his coloration has changed very little, if at all.

a couple more.

p.s.

I don't know if it's of any relevance, but this guy is REALLY territorial and loves to nip at my hands/the other fish. Much more so than other clowns I've had. He is king of the tank, for sure.

That is one of the finest looking ocellaris I have ever seen. You should seriously try breeding it.

Yeah. When I posted about this last year, someone had been seriously interested in seeing if he could "borrow" the fish to breed. It never went through. I honestly don't know anything about breeding these guys. Is it difficult?

So I was doing a little bit of research. Apparently Ocellaris has 11 dorsal spines whereas Perculas have only 10.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this guy only has 10? Take a close look at this first and second picture and tell me what you think (hopefully the picture will be big enough for you to be able to tell).

I got it from a place in Raleigh NC whose name escapes me at the moment.

If there are any experienced locals (I'm in Chapel Hill, NC) who are willing and capable of breeding this guy(or girl), I'd love to work something out with them. It'd be interesting to find out whether or not her coloration was heritable.

number of dorsal spines is a sum what rough generalization. many percs have more then ten spines and many occellaris have fewer. reguardless, thats a great look occellaris variation.

Very nice looking fish.. has the same coloration I got with the hybrid Black Photons. If you got it 3 years ago it definitely did not come from me.

sanjay.
