spike in heat

Ok so my temp spiked up to 82.7 and I did not notice it untill after two days. Two kinds of zoas in two different places seemed to have melted away. One completly and the other still has a few polyps left. Then there is another one that looked frumpy but then seemed ok and five days later ( which is today) it looks closed up and clear jelly like. Is this what happens when heat spikes? All the rest of the corals seems Ok.

Was the temp that high constantly? I'd be a little surprised that temp would cause any permanent damage unless it was that high for an extended period of time.

82 isn't that high of a spike ... that is unless you keep your tank in the low 70's ... seriously doubt that caused any damage

Yes it will cause damage if it is that way for an extended period of time. I lost 2 fish due to high temp because I didnt fix problem sooner. 82.7 is closer to 83 so thats pretty high. Mine was actually at 85 so it was bad.

that is what i was thinking...83 should not be too fatal...mine gets up to 81.5 in the day time...you just have a hard time with zoas...wonder why???

It all depends on your normal tank temp. Like Cabin3tGuy said, if you keep your tank temp. low, then 83 could be a spike that could cause problems. My tank is always between 81 and 81.5, so an occasional 'spike' to 82 or 83 isn't a big deal.

I think this is my conclusion also. Zoas just don't like my tank.

Have you had any more losses or did it stabalize for you!

Loosing anything really stinks, It just gives you a sick feeling.

no more lost. I have had to do several water changes because the ammonia was high. It is looking more stable now. Thanks for asking

I have the same problem im my 55 gallon, but zoas do fine in my 24 gallon.

In my 55, they just disintigrate very slowly. First the mat in between the polyps disappears and then slowly the polyps disappear, too. I dose the same stuff and keep the water parameters the same in both tanks. The 55 has PC and the 24 has MH but I don't think that's it because A - zoas did fine under my PCs for a long time and B - I know plenty of people that do fine with zoanthids under PCs.

In the 55 gallon, I have LOTS of tiny little while snails that live in the sand and come out at night. I also have TONS of the mini starfish. I see both creatures on my zoanthid colonies regularly. Even though everyone says those two critters are reef safe, I really wonder if one of them is eating zoanthids.

I did have a zoanthid eating nudibranch infestation several years ago, but those are long gone and I still have trouble.

Sorry for the rant. I just have the same problem and am frustrated because I've never figured it out.

I am hoping that the zoas left are the stronger one and they will stay. We'll see. I gave BJ a frag of one a while back and they grew like crazy for her and mine just slow died. I do much better with ricodia so I think I'll look to add more of those
