Split Anemones? How to....

Anemones naturally split or bud in the wild as a way of propagating themselves. With that said, a healthy nem might be inclined to put the tremendous amount of energy required to propagate into doing just that, and reproduce. With that said, I have had a beautiful RBTA for two years that had increased in size 5 fold (now 8-9" across) and still has no desire to split! Other RC members have had great luck with their nems splitting.

It's so easy, even a caveman can do it. 1st gently remove from aquarium. Just gently get your finger between him and whatever, just slowly work him out. Took me about 5 min. Wear gloves. Then I put him on dinner plate, foot down, tentacles up. Next, get ketchup, just kidding. Next I CARFULLY using the sharpest fillet knife I own, NOT serrated. I sliced him down the center being very careful to divide the mouth into 2 EQUAL parts. Then in a bucket of aquarium water, I gently swirled him around to remove slime. Then I let him stay there for about 10 min. Swirled again and then I put THEM! back in aquarium. One of them tried to move immediatly but I caught him and put him back and they haven't moved now in 5 months. It's so easy, even a caveman can do it. 1st gently remove from aquarium. When I divided my rose, I had it for 1 year and had grown from 10 inches to 16 inches at which point I realised it was not splitting on it's own. So five months ago I split it into 2 -8 inchers and now they are each 12 inches across and doing great, but taking up too much room in my 75 gal. tank.

Hehe, this is a cool thread. i have a friend that divided hers also after it got really big. She had great success as well :) .

it completely depends on the type of anemone you are trying to split....some are fine, some will die...
Didn't know that. What type of anemonie can't be manually divided?

Mine has almost tripled in size and have not split none.....I have Mini-Carpets that split like crazy! At one time the mini-carpet split into four on it's own.

i am pretty sure you cant split the three big carpets...mag's, hadd's or gig's...

BTA and mini carpets are fine...not sure about LTA's or crispa's

That youtube video shows the "about how to do it" It is much neater and easier to use a little larger sharp knife. When I did mine,I had much more control and could do it in one slice instead of basically sawing. Honestly that looked a little scary. It took along time compared to more controlable knife and it looked like he could cut his finger any second.
