splitting a Scolymia

Im going to get a scolymia and I want to experiment by spitting it into half. I spoke to the guys at coral corral and they said they do it all the time. They would do it for me as well but didn't give me any guarantee on afterward. Have anyone seen it done before?

I've seen scolys cut into quarters. It was done with a diamond blade tile saw and all 4 quarters healed and began to grow. Within 6 months each had a fully formed mouth with about a half inch of tissue around it on the 3/4 that was missing. Idk what has happened to them in the 2 years since they were cut though since I'm no longer in contact with the guy who cut them. IMO though, they'll be fully healed and look normal within 2 or 3 years.

Interesting! I'm really excited to get it done too! The only thing I'm questing is, when will they be able to go back into my tank rather than a healing/frag tank.

Here is a scoly that had lost about 1/3 of it's shell, and some tissue, as if somone had fragged it. It looks happy.

I would think the best thing to do is get the scoly, keep it for at least a month in a tank til it acclimates. And after you cut it, put it in the same tank. I think if you put it in a seperate tank, that would cause more issues.

But Ive never cut one...just my theory.

I think you would just have to wait until it heals over.

Good advise. I should be getting my scoly in soon and I think I will try that first.
