splitting bubble ricordea

I was told that if you put a bubble ricordea on a rock it will multiply and take over the rock. But I was also told that if I put a rubber band around the coral and the rock to form a pressure point over the mouth that I could get the ricordea to split.

If you've done this please help. I did it and the mushroom is starting to split. It does not look happy though. I wasn't expecting it to but I'm a little worried now.
