sponge melting?

When i got up this morning i found that a powerhead had fallen and was pointing towards the sand bed, blowing it all over. Gradually over the rest of the day one of my sponges has been melting, I did a 5 gal water change and still no better. Could the stiring up of the sand bed have caused this ???

Yeah, some sponges, when stressed will completely melt. Others melt normally and release little sponges to go drift away.
