Spots on Blue Hippo Tang

I noticed last night that there are little white spots on my Hippo Tang. It is the only one with them, none of the other tangs, or fish have them. It just showed up. is this the start of ICH? Unfortuately I couldn't get a good picture of it. They are very small, about the size of a pin head, and are all over the body and finns. The fish is about 6-7" long and I would say there is about 30-35 spots on each side. If it is Ich, who has a suggestion on a treatment that would work. Thanks in advance.

I had good luck with Kick Ich. It's not cheap, but it worked with my Naso and did not negatively affect anything in the tank.

Good luck!!

I had great success with a neon goby. They aren't the most reliable cleaners, but they got the job done for me when I failed to quarantine my yellow tang. (please note, this was a series of beginner mistakes that I recomend everyone avoid).

It sounds to me more like marine velvet than ich, due to the size of the spots that youââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢re referring to. From my understanding, marine velvet is supposed to be more invasive. Google it for more information, and donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t jump into any treatment option.
I had a similar outbreak awhile back. All of the fish started to show signs of the disease. I went out and bought a UV sterilizer and that helped all but the fish that started the outbreak. I placed the fish in a quarantine tank and medicated, but it died a few days later. You might want to try a freshwater dip if the disease is just starting. I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t have a lot of experience with these parasites so I canââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t give much help. Also, be cautious going to a LFS for advice on this. Youââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll either get great advice or a sales pitch on whatever they have available.

feed the tang Spectrum Thera-A Anti-Parasitic Formula and it will increase its immune system and you shouldn't have problems with it again. also, provide some vegetation for it to eat. good luck

My blue tang had similar symptoms a few months back. The white spits on mine were like little raised bumps, and my diagnosis was "ich" but I might have been mistooken. Regardless, upon the advice of a LFS employee, I got him out and into a hospital tank. (unfortunately I had to dismantle a good part of the reef to catch him.) I treaded him with low salinity water, (sg ~ 1.015ish) kept the water about 82-3 deg, and added a little bit of (I'm probably going to trash the spelling, but...) methylene blue. (I had some on the shelf and it's worked for me in the past for FW fish ich treatments)

After about a week and a half of hospital I put him in a breeding trap and returned him to the reef. I also purchased a skunk cleaner. After a couple days of no apparent relapse, blue was set free. I saw him frequenting the cleaner to work in his mouth a bit for the first day or so, and has been healthy ever since.

Good Luck !!

There is probably no topic more surrounded by myths and misinformation than the diagnosis and treatment of ecto parasites. I suggest you take a good look at the "fish diseases" forum on RC for links to excellent articles on the subject. Best of luck.

Dderue:

Based on your description of the parasite my guess would be your fish has Cryptocaryon ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œIchââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ NOT Oodinium ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œmarine velvetââ"šÂ¬Ã‚. Please be very careful what medications you put in your tank. Do not put copper in your display! Set up a quarantine and catch the fish. If you think there is time you could try feeding more high quality foods more often and see if the fish can fight it off on its own. Good luck!

A 6"-7" Hippo Tang in a 75 gallon aquarium is a problem.
Add 2 more tangs and it makes it more likely a cause from stress.

Well It isn't a problem anymore. I had him in a hospital tank and last night he called it quits!! :(

Sorry to hear you lost your Hippo. In the future one must remember that tangs are swimmers and need LOTS of room. I would not reccomend one in anything shorter than a 6' tank and even then it is pushing it. Hippos tend to stress easly and when they do they get sick. JMO

Almost 3 years with the Hippo in my 4' tank, this was the first breakout. Must not have been stressed to much.JMO

STRESS DOES NOT CAUSE ICH.

I never stated stress causes Ich. Stress leads to lmany problems..... and I will leave it at that
