Spraypainting Technique

I'm getting ready to try to paint the back of a 10g tank. I figured I'd rather screw up an old, unused 10g than my main tank. Anyways, I taped off the tank and covered the "unpainted" sides with paper last night so I'll be ready to paint this evening.

So, how does the whole paint and tape thing work. How long after painting to I wait before taking off the tape? Do I take off the tape while the paint is still wet? How does this work with putting on multple coats? I figure I need to wait about 15 min between coats.

I haven't done much spraypainting in my time. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

From the Krylon website:
  • Applying in a well ventilated area, hold can 8-10 inches from surface and spray in a sweeping motion from side to side.
  • EZ Touch Fan Spray tip can be adjusted to spray vertically or horizontally- see back label instructions.
  • Apply a thin coat and allow to dry for 30 seconds.
  • Apply multiple thin coats until surface is completely covered.
  • Remove tape immediately after spraying.
  • Fusion dries in 15 minutes or less, and can be handled in about 1 hour.
Looks like I only need to wait 30 seconds between coats and then remove the tape immediately.

the instructions from the site is just about how I did it. I also used 2 different colors on the back, the royal and a dark navy. I tried to show some depth with the darker on the bottom and lighter on top. If you make a mistake just use a razor blade to scrape off the paint and start again.

Will a satin and a gloss paint show up different on the back of the glass? I've got a satin black and a regular gloss navy blue.

Not sure. I doubt you will notice. As you paint just look through the front to see how its going. The back looks very different then the front.

satin and gloss will look the same through the glass, but gloss will be slightly easier to wipe clean with a damp cloth. after you do a couple coats shine a bright light through the paint and see it you have any light spots. it is very easy and you dont even have to worry about runs in the paint because you cant see them through the glass.
