You probably will if you have a TDS (total dissolved solids) meter you could check it for purity ,but that wouldn't tell you what was in the water for that you would need several test kits and you would also need to know what to test for. You could also have a water assay co. do an anylsis of your water(most comprehensive)
Algea isn't the only problem caused by impurities there are many others. Perhaps now you can see why most of us prefer to get a good RODI filter for our tanks it's because that is the cheapest and the most effecient way to assure high quality water.You might get by with spring water but is it worth the health of your tank?
If you have a nano tank then buying distilled water is probably the best option. Sure an RO/DI unit may save you a few bucks in several years but the convenience of just buying a gallon of water for $0.79 every few weeks is worth it.
You shouldn't need much for topoffs at all.
Hell, I can buy premixed SW from my LFS for 75 cents a gallon. Use that for water changes and a little splash of supermarket brand distilled (should say processed by RO on the label) every couple of days keeps my tank full.
