SPS Color and Growth Timeline...Suggestions?

So my tank has been up and running for 13 months now. For the most part it is pretty stable. My PH has changes somewhat since going off the biopellets. Not sure why but it is stable at 7.8 where before it was 8.5 (Calibrates apex probe and test kits). Once I got my dosing pupls timed righ (many months ago) my alk and calc are stable as well (8dkh and 450). Nitrates are consistantly zero as measured by my hanna and Nitrates are zero as measured by my RS test kit and other test kits. Salinity is stable at 35 and temp is at 78 (chiller/heater).

So on Black friday 2011 I purchased a single head of frog spawn, some gsp and some eagle eye. A month later a large galaxia colony, agent orange zoa colony and large green button polyp colony 3 months later I purchased a green birdsnest frag and a purple monti frag. I also bought a nice branch of some purple acro.

A month later the monti bleached and the birdsnest growth took off. The purple acro browned However I noticed the button polyps lightening and my coraline bleached. The birdnest lost its color but was growing very fast. about the size now of a ping pong ball... Suspecting my LED's were too bright I borrowed the clibs light meter. Wow I was cooking them. 700 PAR at the top of the rocks. I dropped them down to 25 percent and the slow increase weekly ever since.

Around April of 2012, I bought some SPS frags. Copps blue hokie, Reefready Grape Juice, ORA Purple Stylo and several other frags. A month later 4 of them died from RTN (alk went over 9) and the grape juice lost all color.

By June my PAR was about 350 at the top of the reef. The bridsnest slowed down, the purple acor colored back up. The blue Hokie colored back and encrusted. The monti never recovered. The birdsnest continued to grow.

During the summer I bought some more frags but this time I light aclimated them in 2 weeks and had ness browning.... All kept their color except the purple stag. It is a light brown now and the bright green polyps have no color. My Purple bonsai was brown when I got it and in two weeks was nice and purple.

So I looked to me that the faster acclimation kept some of the frags from browning... But today my PAR at the top is 500. some frags have not recoverd in color. The Grape juice is growing and in full color. My birdnest growth has slowed down now and most corals have not increased in size at all. just some minor encrusting. My frog spawn now has 2 heads. The Purple stylo is growing well.

I am seeking advise with regard to color and growth. It has taken many many months for the ones that I acclimated over 4 weeks to color back up and like I said, some have not come back. My PO4 and NO4 are zero as measured by many test kits. In am running GFO and my Cheato does not grow are all so I am tending to beleave the zero NO4 reading. I have two frags of my purple stag. One at 350 PAR and one at 250. Both look the same. light brown...

Sounds to me like the corals are starved for nutrients. How many fish do you have in the tank and how often are you feeding them, and in what amounts?

I usually keep my sps at a higher PAR level around 500 also depending on the coral.... but as stated above how many fish do u have? u need to balance the tank out so that there is food for the corals but no enough to get NO3 PO4 levels rising...

I agree... But when you google sps browning they all say high nutrients....

For most of the first year it was only 4 small fish. Last month I bought 4 more and I am hoping it helps.... I feed pellets 3 times a Day with an auto feeder. Since I got the one anthias I added a blast of mysis shrimp when I get home. For corals it was coral smoothie broadcasted twice week. I just started target feeding the brown or pail ones rods food this week.

This strange thing is I had the best growth on that birds nest when I was cooking it....

Since your nutrients are really low. If it were my tank I would start really adding more food to see what happens. I think as long as your phosphate is under .04 you will have no problems. Nitrate under 2. Extra feeding are really a easy thing to try with out ripping your whole tank up. Try adding 50 % more food daily for a week and measure your nutrients, see what you get.

Keep your fish fat.

could you post a picture of your tank. Do the corals look like they are feeding: big pe when the light are out, that is really important. Sometimes they get confused and stop eating.

Gonna take some pics this weekend if I remember to bring home my macro.... Yes killer PE at night....

Here are som pics of the ones with good color but slow growth... The eagle eye was the first coral I got last black friday....so it is over a year and has not covered the plug yet...

Here are some frags with poor color but some growth. I have two pices of this purple stag. one is sitting at 170 PAR and the other is sitting at 270 PAR. The higher one is lighter but has much better growth...

All have been in the tank for about 4 months...

Frogspawn is a year old and has only split once. Sitting at 170 PAR The bigger frogspawn in the back was gotten that way

The birds nest is huge but has poor color... Sitting at 490 PAR. Too much but the growth is killer so I am leaving it... Zeovit coral vitalizer gives it good color when I was overdosing but then I got dino so i only use it twice a week.

The tinius is encrusting but slowly. That is about 4 months old sitting at about 390 PAR...

The fact that my birdsnest grew so fast at the beginning when I was cooking my corals leads me to believe I should bring my par back up. That and my biological filtration was probably not as good as it is now so while undetectable my nutrients were probably higher. So a little more feeding...

Brown SPS usually lead me to think, high PO4. I know your measuring 0, but how are testing for it? You need a good meter for a true reading. High PO4 will also inhibit growth.

well every sps I have gotten has browned out when aclimated to the light too slow. Most all colored back up. This last batch I acclimated in half the time and some did not brown out at all. a few did and have not recovered (post #8).

I measure phosphates with a hanna. I fun GFO and change it out whenever the hana measures over .02. I have given samples to others to check and they also show it at zero.

Since I began target feeding about two seeks abo, I have noticed some slight changes and mt alk is dropping which is telling me I am getting an increase in growth. I know my Grape Juice frag had taken 7 months to color back up so I know that process is slow.

I am probably going to add another fish as well.

i had super low nutriens in my tank and was tourching my corals with leds turned down the light and started to target feed my coral since i only have 2 small clowns. the coral seem much better and my skimmer pulls out any left over

I have seen some growth since I began feeding but not on the ones I am target feeding. So the benefit is probably just from the higher nutrients in the water. I have been intentionally only target feeding the ones with poor color as I have about 20 frags and feeding them all with my Julian's thing will dump way too much food in the water. Plus as an experiment I want to compare the results to the not target fed frags...

My water has always been quite clean and the skimmer output is typically low. Sure I can turn it up and skim wet but then when my water starts generating more skimmer bubbles, then I get an overflow. So I tend to keep it adjusted dry...

So it has been a months of feeding 5 times a day... 4 times pellets with the auto feeder and onewce with either mysis or rods pacific plankton. Additionally I target feed twice a week with coral-v-power and also every other day with rods coral food.. Overall between the changing od salt to coral pro and the additional feeding I have seen a very very slight change... The alk has not changes much any more...

So with this massive increase in feeding my nitrates went up to .25 but only for about two weeks. This week it's back to zero....

I was thinking of upping my GFO even though it measures zero on the Hanna 713.... I do get some green on the glass about every other day.

I also noticed my skimmer is not putting out much skimmate lately.... I took it apart and gave it a good cleaning in vinegar and it looks like new. The impeller looks like new as well. My water is crystal clear....

When you test with your Hanna Checker do you use a Syringe? or do you go by the White line on the cuvette , if you use the Line your getting inaccurate readings, using a syringe is alot easer and more accurate

Mag is between 1400 and 1440 and has never changes.... Red sea test kit...

Thanks for the suggestion on the syringe...

I think tomorrow I am gonna add more GFO.... I need to clean the glass daily so even though my po4 is zero something is feeding the algae...
