SPS Corals Missing Color

I agree with a couple of people here, all you need to do is increase the light level to 70-75% and add Lugo solution 5-6 drops per 120 gallon once a week and your blue and purples will pop. The light has to be turned up considerably to have any effect at all. I am not a marine biologist but I have been in the reef hobby for 20 years growing SPS and LPS. With this process even any brown in color acro's will eventually turn blue as well. Good Luck!

I've just measured my Iodine and it is at 0.06 ppm, I don't think I have any Iodine deficiency then.

My Phosphates and Nitrates are still undetectable. My my macro algae and Xenia strive.

I`ve read somwhere that you need to keep nitrates at around 3-5, and the coloration should pop up. I recently added 8 fish to my system and nitrates are at 0.25 which is still too low i think. i`ll try to feed heavily and we`ll see what happenes also i decreased my white leds to 50% and my lps loves that, but two of my pale acroporas went brown, so i`ll try to increase it slowly now. I`ll report more.

To the op I'm running 4 g2's over a 200. I'm running gfo and the rox . There are a few threads about the rox stripping the water column. I think they over estimate how much to use per gal. I run the same amount as another poster of a 1/4. I change it once a month to a month and a half. The gfo I run is from brs and run half of the recommended. I added a few more fish which area few wrasses and 5 anthrax. The anthias are demanding and need to be feed several times a day. Since doing tissue to the feeding my color has improved drastically . My nitrates are around 10 & po4 are at .03.

I would take caution about ramping up your lights to 100%. I got mine up to 70% and the effects were bad. my red planets which are at the bottom of my tank started bleaching. earlier this week I just dialed it back to 60%and that is where my tank looked best. I run the color program with a tweak. at th top of the peak I have my blues at 100 white at 70 red/green 50. I only run that for two hours before goes back to the normal program.
this has justbeen my experience with my tank gl .

Brown is low light...

Yes i know, i started to increase the lights very slowly and i`ll see where it will lead me. only two acroporas wet browno, other corals are colourful

I am so looking forward to the next few weeks so that I can either support or dismiss that claim. :)

How about an update n your SPS color situation? You were going to alter some of your dosing practices and see how that affects your SPS coloration, and then look at your lighting if you saw no results.

How is your tank doing?:)

+1 An update good or bad, would be nice.

Thank you all for asking... I will be posting a regular video update in the next couple of days so that you can judge by yourself (simply search for Winterfell Reef on RC for my thread, videos are hosted on YouTube).

So, it's been a few weeks... and I've tried a few things, mind you, I did not make all of them at once. Instead I was doing one change at a time and then waiting for at least 2 weeks to try something else. I'm listing them in no particular order, since I honestly don't remember, but there was usually no overlap between either change.

Carbon
I have removed carbon (have not been running any GFO) and have ran it this way for a few weeks, then I've noticed that my water was getting a yellow tint so I've gradually put it back... I'm using a very minimal amount (100ml) in a passive way. Did not notice any beneficial changes.

ProdiBio
I've stopped dosing Stronti and Iodine and instead just used BioDigest and ProdiBio, I've also cut down the amount to 1 vial of each every 14 days. My nitrates are still undetectable and my Phosphates are at 0.01. No significant change on the coloration.

Lighting
I've been gradually increasing light intensity on my tank, from 50% to 70%, 5% every week or two. I've stopped at 70% since my LPS seem to not appreciate it this much, but have not noticed that much of a change in my SPS. My birds nest is definitely showing more pink, but those parts of it that are pink don't show as good of a polyp extension as the ones that are brown.
So can't really say there is a significant change.

So that's pretty much it, my water changes are roughly 10-15% every week, my Alkalinity is at 7.1. Coral polyp extension is crazy, corals are growing like no tomorrow - everything is just increasing in size.

What are my plans, you might ask?

Well, I will try and switch to a different brand of salt, I will also be upgrading a tank in the near future, so there will be some serious stress for my corals in the next few months.

Oh, the last 4 weeks I've been adding Fauna Marine Color Elements (3 part) that is supposed to significantly boost the coloration. I've been adding 10ml every week. Can't say that I see any significant change in colour.

Finally, my macro algae is growing, but my windows need to be cleaned only once a week if that. I'm also seeing very little coralline algae.

If after changing the salt brand, you dont get any joy...then PM me. My buddy uses the Radion Pro's and gets god SPS colour. I will ask him to send me his Radion Light schedule and I can send that to you.

We can try that next.

Keep us updated.

I noticed you have GSP. GSP is pretty darn aggressive. It has strong chemical defenses which could very well be a cause of stress to the rest of your coral quite possibly leading to poor coloration.

If the GSP is located VERY close to an SPS then maybe...

But, the best SPS colours I had was a few years ago...with the exact same equipment I have now...and at that time I had a massive GSP colony growing on my tanks bottom.

I still feel that if corals are pale it might be due to coral undernutrition. I started to feed fish more heavily and i noticed improvement in coloration over 2-4 weeks. of course i`m not happy with all corals, but change is significant

Thanks, I've been running them at 50%, so I'll turn them up slightly to 60% for this month to see if it makes a difference.

I did notice that my softies did not like bright light - frog spawn in particular go all washed out. And all favias would simply die off.

Not dead just bleached Same thing happened to me..MOve it far away and it'll recover
