SPS dieing at the tips

FWIW several people have reported problems running Mag pumps (ok everybody can make fun of me now and talk about how in the old days people used to put nails in their tanks:) ) Whether it's due to the stainless screws or something else I don't know. I was having some STN problems on a couple of corals a while back and it went away the week I took the Mag 9 out. I'm not trying to pick on Mags(FWIW I still have one on my 40 with no apparent problems) just relating my experience as another possibility. Also FWIW I tried one of the Fe based Pi removers a while back and had bad problems with that....lots of people have

I think my issue was when I added kalk to the reactor the alk would go up 2 dkh within a few hours. I know add less kalk at a time. I hope this was the cause.
 
Could a single Alk and/or pH shift cause tips to die off like that. Not a huge shift but say a 2dKh shift for a few hours ???
 
i don't use mag pump on mine,my water is good in all paremeter.non of my fishes pick on them either.the only thing rusty is my co2 tank.which sit next to my sump.maybe that what cause it.if my tank have rust in them what can i do to remove it or what do i test for?thanks in advance
