sps growth under t5's

I have to disagree James. Sure the ATI's, aquatinic's, sfiligoi's are better than the tek light. But in the right situation the TEK's are more than adequate. I ran a 6x54w tek over a 48x18x18 tank for over a year. I got very good growth out of my SPS and I was able to keep clams on the bottom of my tank (bare bottom). For tanks less than 20" tall Teks will do just fine. Also like I said before I currently have a sfiligoi 12x54 over a 48x30x20 tank. I don't see a huge difference with that and the 6x54 + 4x54 teks I was running on my current setup.

I might be a bit bias, but the ATI hands down is worth its weight in gold. I consider the 12X54 sfiligoli against the 10X54 ATI and went with the ATI. Just put it this way, reefgeek no longer sells the sfiliogi for a reason and had them on clearance.

I need to qualify my statement regarding Sfiligoi - I'm glad they make a 6 lamp 24" fixture. For whatever reason these seem to be few and far between. SLS doesn't make a single 6 lamp fixture in either the Tek or New Wave line in 24". So good on Sfiligoi for making one but it's too bad they aren't actively cooled.

I need a 6 lamp fixture so I can get a blend of daylight, blue, white, and actinic lights to try to pull out deeper colors and avoid the pastel T5 look. 4 lamps is too limiting in this regard.

ianiwane,

I'm not saying that Teks won't grow coral. I'm just saying that the PowerModul makes twice the PAR of a Tek (and of course it costs twice as much). I have had both fixtures of the same length and with the same number of bulbs and my growth and colors with the PowerModul were way more then twice what it was with the Tek.

As far as comparing the Tek to a Siligoi, it sure would be nice to know how much PAR a Sfiligoi makes?

James

wow i went to reef a palooza yesterday and missed all this great controversy/ debate.

empireinc00,
it looks like you got some great growth out of your new fixture, it looks a little more blue too, so better growth with a more blue < par that looks great man.

keep the comparison pics coming. :D

oh and some news from reef a palooza...

i had the chance to meet greg from reefgeeks, great guy, and he showed me the new t5 retro and "ready fit fixture" they are working on. so what you may think. so it is 100% dimable, yes they are controlling it like led's and it looked awsome.
the retro should be ready around this january or febuary and the "ready fit" shortly after. and yes it will be activly cooled!
greg was telling me how hard it is to get the ATI powermoudel in, they ship in low numbers and are hard to get a hold of.
oh and it is more competivly priced then the ATI PM's so theres that too, so there's that.
i just wish it was ready now!

that is my problem with this hobby, the need for PATIENCE!!!

boodlefish, I don't see any info on the new t5 retro and "ready fit fixture" on reefgeeks website. Do you have a link to more info?

well seeing his post above, the new products wont be out till january or feb, so i doubt info will be up any time soon.....

sorry guys,
i dont have any links, but i have greg's card and he told me to give him a call when i decided on the lighting i want to go with. i know i know all sales people hand out cards it just felt good when i read his card and he is the prez/ ceo of reefgeeks, and he spent like 20 min (depending who you ask, my GF says like forever! :P) or more gabbing with me about lights and so on. i know it is his job but it still made me feel important and i will drop some coin @ reefgeek in the future.

im actually thinking about going back to reef a palooza today to, pu some more stuff and pester greg again. if i get any further details on the new t5 design i will most certinly post them.

oh and anyone have any more pics???

james,

thats it i am going back to reef a palooza this time w/ my camera. shoot i keep asking for pics but havent provided any, so fair is fair.

so keep an eye out for some pics later tonight on these new wizards :D

ok guys i went back to reef a palooza, and talked to greg from reefgeek again, and this controlable t5's are bad A$$.
not only are they dimmable they are dimmable on separate channels and programable, which brings a new meaning to sunrise and sunset for t5's.
they are working on making about as controlable as led set up. (their led set up is pretty cool too expensive but cool)

the best i could do with my camera.

the prototype

the controller

lower % PAR

higher % PAR

high % white & low % blue
P1010008.jpg

the pics do no justice to the difference/ dimmable power
greg welcomed me to post pics but remind all that this is a mear prototype and the real deal will be much more sexy!:p

i posted some pics now i wanna see more growth shots from some of you t5 reefers!

pito,
like i said these pics do no justice, you have to see it to really get a feel for it.
it is dimmable by percent per color or channel. greg said they are looking at 1 channel per 2 bulbs so a 6 by would have 3 channels and an 8 by would have 4 channels, each channel can be programed to to slowly build to your desired level. making any color scheme achievable.
oh and you can choose the rate and time it take to achieve your desired light scheme, which means your sunrise can be precisely dialed in, lasting as long as you want. one could set sunrise to gradually grow over an hours time. imagine that. oh and greg said they are also working on an led moonlight cycle as well.

pito for more info call greg at reefgeek directly toll free @ 866-295-9230, and if you do call him tell him Tucker refereed you via this post, i dont think he will give me any more of a discount or anything but its always worth a shot.:)

oh and no more pic's guys, energy costs are soaring lets see some t5 reefs:D

oh and greg said it would be competitavly priced some where between tech and ATI pm
and they may come out with both a controlable and non controlable unit at separate prices. he could not give me a set price because they are not finished yet, and any one else in business here understands that its hard to do a final costing until you have the finished product in-hand.

it will be an awsome alternative to what is currently on the market that much is for sure.

T5

T5

Here's a 6 month old 100 gallon under 8 tube tek t5's.There is only 4 bulbs running in this pic equal mix of ati blue + and aquablue specials.

Very cool info Tucker, thanks for the pics!

The pre-built pic looks alot like the Fauna Marin Ultra Solaris (with the exposed bulbs) Active cooling and dimming capable, whats not to like about that.

:D booblefish, i wonder the same thing some times, I do have a 180 sps in the works for next year going to be all zeovit and high end equipment not to mention a 10x54watt Ati power mod. I think ill have to sell my 8 gal nano to free up some time :lmao:
