New to corals and salt water keeping in general. This piece came on a piece of live rock. At fist I just assumed it was some sort of soft coral until I touched it. Its hard and feels like sand paper. It has very tiny polyps. Any help would be appreciated. Also any one know what kind of anemone is pictured? Also a hitch hiker.

Ive looked up Chalice and montis, not chalice for sure and I still cant tell if its a monti.

The polyps are extremely tiny. The also seem to be spaced out kind of randomly which I find odd. The feeders/feelers/what ever they are called, are really fine as well. It is growing, slowly, but growing. It has also started to lift up and away from the rock I suppose much like the pictures of montipora do.

The Majano was injected with boiling tank water with a few drops of lime juice. It disappeared in a puff of smoke and has yet to return in the last 24hrs.

A better close up of the polyps would really help otherwise all you are going to get are guesses. My best guess would be it could also be Porites.
Where is the rock from?

I couldn't tell if i was looking at tiny polyps of the ridges of the skeleton. Some ridges for a circle pattern. That was my reasoning.
Didn't have to look at the pic, I just read the op clearly described in his first post.

Here is a better pic.

The polyps are closed up. The one that appears open is actually a tube worm as the polyps are the same color as the coral. They are usually open earlier in the day. Now that I think about it, the rock may have been a trade in at the LFS.

Doubt porites, they have denser polyps per given area compared to most encrusting monti such as in the pic (digitatas do have dense polyps, though). Disclaimer: can't get a clearer, bigger pic on my iPhone.

That looks like some sort of Briareum, maybe star polyps. Your original post says it felt like sandpaper but I bet it is more like a rough leather. It could also be a Heliopora.

Not any sort of Briareum for sure. It IS a stony coral.

I did fine a pic of heliopora that looks similar. Ive got it in a BC29. Like stated earlier, it is growing, slowly though. Im retrofitting LEDs in a couple of weeks maybe it will grow a bit faster.

Still interested in figuring out what it is though!
