SPS In-wall 2.0

Looks like its gonna be a nice set-up. I dont know if we know each other but i live in Cedar Park, i dont recognize your screen name but mine is the same on Austin Reef Club. Cant wait to see it all in action. Defntly a great start to what shld be a nice SPS tank. If you are in the market for corals when your ready give me a shout. My tank is all SPS as well.

FYI if that is a Jagger heater you cant full submerge them like you have it laid out. It has a max water line on it. Good looking set up, cant wait to see it wet and full of rock.

That was my understanding as well, but apparently the newer ones ARE fully submersible. You just have to make sure you have a newer one that is marked as fully submersible.

I haven't really posted anything over on ARC. I used to post a little on MAAST back when I had my old tank running. If you've had your tank up for a few years there's a chance I've been to your house....I had bought a bunch of different frags from a lot of people back then. :) You have a link to your tank somewhere?

on ARC under Reefkeeping theres a video on there, i have a thread on here for "Strawberry Shortcake Growth shots" othe than that i dont thnk i have a FTS here. Its Jeremy here aka OFFROADODGE. I havent bought any coral local for over a year, to many BAD bugs going around and im not in the mood for a tank teardown.

A.G.E is building the tank. The stand/cabinets...yes, did it all myself. More pics of that coming soon because I have to make modifications to fit the new tank...

I hear you on the bugs. I'm gonna do this tank differently (I hope) and stock everything at once from as few sources as possible then let it grow out without putting stuff in it every week. Hopefully I'll reduce my chances at putting something bad in there.

Keep that Strawberry Shortcake growing though...I might want to grab a piece of it! :)

thats cool, ive got alot of LE pieces to cut (nice sized). Palmers Blue Mille, Sunset Mille,Halloween Mille,ORA Pearlberry,Silverbullet Pro,Baby Blue Teraki,Pink Lemonade,Blue Lemonade,Phils Granulosa,BubbleGum Mille,Pink MIlle etc. LMK, you can stop by and take a look. Oh and growing out strawberry shortcake, icefire, oregon, and purple monster

Great build! One question, why add the expense of a rimless on an in-wall build?

For this size tank they'll use 1/2" glass and there wasn't a difference in cost for rimless vs eurobraced.

Also, one side of the tank will be rimless...the back side.

It's coming along nicely. Can't wait to see it all done. I live in San Antonio. Maybe one day I can come and see it all done in person. Nice looking wetdry build BTW.

O.o

O.o

Man, an 8x54w ATI Powermodule sure does look intimidating in person! It's just....huge! I hope I don't regret going with 4ft bulbs.

everything is looking sweet. CAn you explain the flow thru the sump. Why do you have the little boxed shelf that the drains empty into opposed to just the filter sock?

I am trying to figure out how i want to add a filter sock to my sump. I have an acrylic sump and have now done a little DIY acrylic work so I am comfortable enuf to make & mod my sump

The overflows dump into that compartment for a few reasons. The first is that I have 3 pipes coming down from the tank that can potentially be feeding the sump water. I wanted to be able to filter the water coming through those pipes with 1 filter sock. Putting 3 pipes into 1 sock makes it kind of hard to change out the sock.

Also, I wanted the main siphon overflow and main durso overflow to be submerged to reduce noise and bubbles. Submerging them and having a sock wrapped around them would again make it kind of hard to change out the socks - especially since the return lines are vertical without bends which would make it hard to "lift" them out of the sock.

So basically I wanted a cleaner solution where the pipes weren't sticking into the sock but all the flow still went through the sock. I got the idea from an Aqueon Proflex sump I saw online - but I wanted one to accomodate multiple pipes and 1 large 7" sock. It turns out RC member slief has done this as well and his sump helped confirm my design.

Tank Update

Tank Update

Well, ran into a few delays on getting the tank build last week because of Spring break (delays on A.G.E end...not mine). But I've got the drawings back from A.G.E in hand now and just have to sign it and send back before they can start. So it hopefully won't be much longer. Of course, I'll still have to take off and drive down to pick it up...

Ok, makes sense, but i would assume that debris would get stuck in the lip of the ring correct? I have been wanting to design something similiar. Just need to fine tune & this may be it!

Do you happen to have a closer shot of that area....hard to see where acrylic edges are & what not.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Sorry for the delay...haven't been on the computer much over the weekend.

The filter sock ring sits recessed in a piece of 3/8" acrylic...so that the top of the ring is almost flush with the top of the acrylic. Any "debris" catching should be pretty minimal.

I spent most of the weekend working on the cabinets in preparation for actually getting a tank. Some things accomplished:

  • Built up the base that the aquarium will sit on to be at the same height as the trim pieces. I had to do this since the new tank is wider front to back than the old tank and has to sit on the horizontal maple trim. Really hard to explain...but the end result is that the plywood sheet underneath the tools in the picture below was installed and shimmed (thank god for 15" planers!) to the height of the trim in front/back of it.
  • Made a cutout in the right side wall between the right cabinet area and where the tank goes. This is to facilitate placing a Vortech on the end glass.
  • Made another cutout in the left side wall - this one for another Vortech as well as to make room for the external overflow. The trim piece in the picture (behind the bottle of glue) isn't permanently installed (press fit at the moment) - its removeable so the tank can be slid in place.
  • I added a removable shelf above the left side cabinet (above where the overflow will be). This will be for overflow maintenance access. It'll be protected by a thick coat of marine proof finish on the bottom as well as an acrylic cover on top of the overflow.

Notice the quarantine tank up and running in the background? :)

So other than all that...tonight I finally got around to opening up my Apex and start gettting it setup. I've got most all of the internet/wireless/email/txt stuff working. Just having a problem with port forwarding from my router that I've still gotta work through.

I put in another set of drygoods orders last week as well...including another EB8 for the Apex, a WMX module, Conductivity probe/module, and a couple Vortech MP40s. I think at this point I've ordered everything of substance I'm going to need for the tank except for some dosing pumps (out of stock at BRS).
