Would love to know what you are running now that is more reliable.
One of my MP40s had been running 4+ years at 100% before I finally had to replace the controller. So far IME more reliable than any other brand of powerhead I've owned.

I own 2xmp40w and within a month (11-12month age of age) all 3 wet ends broke, 1 controller and one dry end. They were all under warranty but who are we kidding that they are reliable. They do give awesome flow none the less and also I use reefcrest as will 70% of all users from the numerous other polls I have seen

If you're running two mp40's synced, how do you program them to go into night mode? Is it in the manual?

sync just means they work together doing the same thing (ie they mirror each other), antisync is where they are doing the opposite, etc.
should be no difference in night mode between sync and antisync...I'm not sure why anyone would run them synced, since sntisync is how you get more random flow and wave action.

Right now I've only got one tank running (my pico which is significantly too small for a proper wavemaker), but on the new tank I'll be running a pair of closed loops with Tunze pumps - both of which I know are reliable long-term and won't infuriate me to the point I shut the tank down and sell everything.
Don't get me wrong, the VorTech is a brilliant pump... as a pump. As a feat of engineering and construction however, it's pretty damn poor... especially when you're staring down the face of $600 to buy it and then another $120+ every time the wet end breaks... which it does... a lot. I can accept mediocre... I can't accept mediocre and then paying through the nose for it.

I have four MP40s. Two of which have been running at 100%(My original pair had no other option except 0-100%) for 4+ years. I had to replace one of the original metal box controllers after 3+ years and the second one recently at 4+ years. The other two have been running 100% reefcrest for over 2.5 years. I literally last week ordered my first wetside replacement.
Would be interesting to know what has caused my luck to be so much better than yours.
First I'll say that I will agree that closed loop is awesome.
FWIW I have made many powerhead purchases over the years. I started with Seios and Maxijets. I've got a Polario and a Tunze 6101 on my frag tank, (4)MP40s (2)Mp60s and a Tunze 6305 on my DT.
Out of all the powerheads I've ever owned, my Tunze 6305 was by far the fastest to die (less than 6 months) and it was $800.
That said, Tunze customer service was top notch, no questions asked, they had it repaired and back to me in less than two weeks. It's currently going on it's second six months.
So good luck to you with whatever you finally decide to go with.

I run 4 of these babies on my 180. I like to move water, so I have all four randomly long pulsed running at full blast. Why have these pumps if you don't run them for all they've got?
I also have 7 Tunze nanos (4 6025, 2 6055 and 1 6045) across the back of my tank as well. They are all modded, so they are each putting much more than stock flow.
Also have two 3/4 inch Sea Swirls on my return of 1200 gph, so the flow is wild and chaotic.
