The DQ King
I think I might have aefw yet again. Rid them in my 75g and somehow a egg must have slipped into this on a drag and I missed it when dipping/ inspecting. Quite mad at myself. I have about 20mini colonies and my girl said the Carolina looks like its being eaten. Im on vacation sitting in the sun trying to put together what I need so I don't have this issue again.

Im thinking a 20g long.
get a 2 bulb Ta or a 3 bulb T5
hob skimmer
Hob filter
Powerhead
eggcrate
and some live rock from my display

Input/ suggestions/ suggestions on brands...ext anything would be awesome

Thanks guys

Ill also need some advice on what's the best route to do this. Should I skip the live rock and just seed the hob filter by putting it in my sump for a few weeks then swapping it over. I've never done this so ill need some helpful tips :)

Have to love those damn bugs that make us spend more money on things we don't want to

I had the same issue when I added a new frag and a few days later noticed it have evidence of AEFW.

I set up a 40Breeder QT with Eheim canister, Sieo power head, 150w heater, 2x 96w PC and live rock from my DT. Just got a CPR bak pak from a friend and it seems to be a great addition.

I used new water and dipped all corals after acclimating and did Two months later no red bugs and no evidence of AEFW. most corals are doing fine a few didn't make it I think due to weekly dips. dont dip unless you need to I guess.

There is a great QT article on Reefkeeping.com

Did yours do fine under that kind of lighting?

GREAT topic and ironically one I was going to post soon, so perfect timing.

Where on RK.com is the article? I could not find it.

Regarding setting up a QT tank. I was considering setting up a basic 12-gl Nano http://goo.gl/JJcnQ that you can purchase (fully setup tank in a box) and try to keep it very simple. Maybe someone that has Nano tank experience can chime in?

But I do not think it would take much to get something along those lines setup and cycled and then use to QT sps's and also allow fish to acclimate prior to adding to you DT.

Hope to gain more knowledge on this topic through this thread.

Many thanks..........

I use my old 12 gal Aquapod w/ 70 watt MH sunpod for QT. I just have a cheapo ebay bulb- it works OK to keep everything fairly happy for the few weeks that it's in there. I started out with nanos so I don't mind the upkeep. I'm able to leave the glass lid on so evaporation is at a minimum and I don't have trouble with jumpers. I do small waterchanges with water from my main tank once or twice a week, depending on what I have in there. Has also worked well as an sps/lps hospital tank. The MJ 900 that I have in there provides just enough flow for the sps but not so much to damage the lps. For filtration, I keep some small bags of chemipure on hand and since I leave it up nearly all the time I don't need to deal with a cycle either. I also keep a cheap HOB aquaclear around if I need a little bit more filtration I can just set it up on the return chamber without freaking the fish out.
This setup works well for me.

If it is just for corals and not fish then I would not bother with the LR. If for fish too then go ahead. Also just put a foam filter in your sump for a while to get bacteria colonized then transfer over. egg crate then a 2-4 bulb T5 or 70w Mh will work great. I dip my corals in fresh RO water for 5-15 sec this kill a good bit of stuff but not everything. Then observe for 2-4 weeks before transfer to display. If only for this long you may not need a skimmer unless you just have one laying around then by all means go ahead. I would not do a mass treatment on the whole tank unless no other options. good luck.

Here is a pic of a friends 1 side for fish 1 for corals and the light is a 4x39w T5 from fishneedit. The only problem he had was the water level fluctuates on the small side when he sticks his hand in that side almost overflowing.

After having red bugs I decided to make a QT too...

I used a 10g waterhome hagen aquarium that I already had...
I am using water coming from the DT to change 0.5g per day automatically with dosing pumps and I drilled a 1/4 inch hole to the side to make an overflow :

An aqualifter pump (controlled by the apex, 6 sec 5 times per day) to compensate for water evaporation.

So very lo maintenance for this setup and pretty happy for now (3 weeks use)

I also modified the top to add a reefbrite led strip 15" to the powerglo tube already there :

and this gives me about 100 par on the bottom :

Whats the issue/pest you may have?

Yes in deed. My acros started looking bad about a month ago. I had some bleaching some turning brown some with just the tips turning white........ And quite a few that were receding from the base and traveling up the sides. I didn't think it was a parasite as I dip everything that goes into my tank. EXCEPT!!! My buddies frags from his tank. As he dips everything as well(so I thought) before narrowing it down to pests I did everything checked everything blah blah blah. It was driving me insane!!!!
THEN my friend said he was having the same issues and the same two corals that didn't seem to be bothered. A toxic tort and Ora echinata. So I pulled a bleached acro out that died and checked it very good and BAM! Saw some egg sacks.
