SPS slime up during feeding time!

as above! i have been feeding Dr G's clam max and Reef roids 2-3 times a week and usually i either leave my pump + wavemaker on or i just turn off my wavemaker for 10 mins.

Today i was looking at my sps from the top and i usually turned off every pump so i can have a flat look from the top. i noticed 10 mins after i fed, the sps were all sliming up! it looks like as if they were trying to trap and capture the food.

im kinda worried did i overfeed them or are they just trying to catch the food?

Some pics :

my millies and kitkat slimed the most. birdnest didn't slime at all.

Thanks!

I have several acros that slime like mad when I put in oyster feast. I am assuming its the way they catch particulates in the water almost like the vermitid (sp?) Snail. I could be completely wrong but that has been my assumption.

That type of sliming is a defensive response to irritation/attack - it is the coral trying to protect itself. Feeding polyps are those that you see out at night - they are retracted back into the coral. Slime eventually just gets blown away with the current, as does anything that gets caught in the slime. Defense polyps are also stringy and white, but usually are no longer than an inch, maybe inch and a half, and also get retracted back into the coral when the threat is gone. Usually you would see this type of polyp for example when two corals are growing into each other - actually you would likely see both defense stinging polyps as well as slime.

Im assuming you are keeping the Dr. G's in the fridge? How much are you feeding? It's mesenterial filaments and its either a defense in response to a cold spot created by the Dr. G's right out of the fridge or just a feeding response to juicy foods or feed that is high in amino acids. Milli are infamous for this. Hope this helps.

yes i keep them in the fridge, and i was feeding just reef roids when they started to slime up so much.. DR g clam max dosn't seem to get much response from them. i usually either feed 1 capful clam max or 1/2 teaspoon reef roids in my 65g tank ( separate day)
